Hi ALL
Can someone tell me, can my local vets do hip and eye tests? If so how much are we looking for to get them done? How long until we get the results back. Does anyone know approximates to any of these questions?
Thanks

my vet charges £125 for a hip score
Hi CJ
Don't know about eyes I'm afraid, but your vet can do the hip x-rays. The plates go off to the BVA and you can get the results back as fast as 6 days (happened to me once, couldn't believe it) or up to about 4-5 weeks if you miss a panel, or if they are really busy. The BVA makes a charge and so does your vet. I last had one done about 2 years ago, cost about £120 total, I think, but vet's charges can really vary.

Most vets will do the hips, although it would be better to use a vet that does them frequently, I was told they can place the dog better, they will also be able to give you a more accurate idea of the score. I was told around 5:4 and it came back 5:2. My vet charged £70 and the BVA fee was £29. It took 4 weeks to get the results, which was in september 2005. I had to go to a specialist for the eyes, can't remember the exact cost, I think it was about £30.
Hope this helps.

Eye testing needs to be done by a specialist. Eye testing sessions held at a show or organised sessions are usually cheaper. I have a session in February in Haddenham in Bucks, the charge will be about £17-£18 depending on the BVA charges, hall hire costs and paying the expenses of the specialist attending.

Bassets have to have a Gonioscopy examination are you offering this ? if so you need to tell the Basset folk as panelists rarely do Gonioscopy at clinics

Do make your vet is used to taking good quality X rays for scoring & not just for diagnosis of injury as the two are not the same
You only get one chance at scoring & poor plates can be rejected & if not rejected they can affect the score
The BVA site link is below
http://www.bva.co.uk/public/chs/ & the age etc requirement are on there
If you click on the BVA Eye Test Clinic link on this site
http://www.isds.org.uk/services/index.htm & you will see where there are clinincs where the cost of the test is reduced. None DNA test eye resukts are notified immediately
Depending on your dogs breed there are also DNA tests available for some genetic eye conditions here
http://www.optigen.com/opt9_test.html these are expensive but of course do not have to be repeated & again using a 20/20 clinic & ordering online reduces the cost

It cost me £170 for the hips last February. It can varty greatly from Vet to Vet.
As for eyes they have to be doen by an Opthalmologist on the eye panel,a dn the charges vary depending if you go on your own to have it doen or go to a group session where a group discount will reduce the cost. Many breed clubs arrage sessions at their events or shows.

I paid my vet £73 for Barbie hip scores and the test were done at a special day a local kennels have, that cost £15.

Hi Chezza,
Eye testing is done by a specialist vet. Your vet should tell you where you can get it done. Try contacting your breeder or get one of the show newspapers Dog World or Our Dogs who will tell you of a nearby testing day at a local show the cost is around £30-£40. I have my hips done by a specialist vet at a more reasonable cost. The results of the eye test results are instant and have to be done every year annually. Hips are done once and have to be sent to Kennel Club for verification and scoring. They charge you for this.
I always eye test first because its the cheaper option and if they fail you have only lost this cost, and not nearly £100+!

Are you going to breed from your bitch that has flanged ribs & Malassezia then ?
Please be serious. Besides they are both 2 different bitches, so don't presume. I have another beautiful Bitch and I am taking her to see the stud dog this Sunday, so the breeder can tell me which of her stud dogs will compliment mine. They are all Kc Registered, before you go into one. I am a responsable Person and I am breeding this bitch with one of the top stud dogs in the country to try and obtain a fine quality pup for showing. I have many Breeders of my breed who are willing to help me. Thanks for your concern.

As you have never mentioned this other bitch how am I to know You have only ever meantioned the bitch with the abov e& it has been known for people to breed off dogs with a multitude of problems
BTW your bitch will need the standard eye test & the Gonioscopy which is another £28 & not available at some clinics so you will need to contact you nearest panelist to see when he/she will be holding a clinic or be available.
It's as well you are going to an experienced stud dog owner as Bassets are not the easiest of breeds
Hi
Thanks I know they are not easy to breed and most of the time they need C-Sections too. I already have a big list of people in my area who want puppies. I hope to start showing one of my bitches soon, but she is being a pain, she doesn't mind the lead when she is out with the other girls. But as soon as it's just her on her own, she is stubborn and won't move and you can imagine trying to get her to do as she is told. She is getting there on the standing part of it. I am hoping to do well with her, as her dad I believe is stud dog of the country and has won many CC's etc...
Well any pointers would be greatfully recieved about the lead problem.
CJ

Well Ring Craft is one way so she gets used to being on her own
The local Basset breeders come to our ringcraft unfortunately their stud dog took an instant to my BC puppy & bit him in the face so I now steer well clear of them. They do start RC with their early though. & have puppies who I hope are better behaved due to start at RC any week now
Oh yes I forgot to mention, I don't own the bitch with the rib problem anymore, I took her straight back to the breeder and got him to give me her sister, who is beautiful and has no problems to note of.
So don't worry on that score.

So is it the sister you are going to breed from?
No, is the answer, she is still a puppy, infact I rehomed her 8 months ago the sister and she is coming back to us tonight, as a responsiable person I am, even though I didn't breed her, I am taking her back and no, I didn't get her back for free.
I am breeding from a 4yr old bitch, I do have some common sense. She is a beautiful example of the breed and from using one of the best stud dogs, as I did look around, I hope to get a beautiful show puppy.
Thanks for your concerns, but I have my head tightly screwed on. Also I have already got homes for them all, infact I have a list of 15 people wanting puppies, so no shortage of homes. Thanks Again.
