hi

My bitch was mated on the 31 Dec and again 2 Jan. Making her 16/18 days pregnant( if the mating was successful naturally) Since the mating she has continued to bleed, She now has a dark almost black discharge. Not a lot but a drip every know and then. She is very well, eating and pooing ok. Very bright and allert showing no signs of illness at all.

I think she may be pregnant, she is slightly larger under the rib cage, nipples pink and prominent. I know it is to early to say for sure.  Could she be carrying a large litter and this is why she is putting on weight?

Should i be worried about the discharge though? I am obviously keeping a very close eye on her. This is her second litter and I am pretty sure this happend the last time but cant remember how long it lasted. I would like to avoid the vets if possible as she doesnt like going and dont want to stress her if not needed. If I was concerned at all about her health  I would take her. But at the moment she looks like a very healthy girl.

I have read so much stuff about this I am now confusing my self to what is right and what is wrong. If it is a pyometra how would I know for sure.

I have just found this site and it looks really good. Hopefully I will find lots of good advice on it.

Thanks in advance

Wendy

At what stage in her season was she mated? My bitches have generally carried on bleeding for the length of the season, whether or not they were mated (and whether or not the mating was successful). It sounds as though the discharge is drying up, and is old blood (not fresh, bright red blood). Is there and offensive smell? If in any doubt, a visit to the vet is a wise move.

Hi

She was mated on the 12 and 14 day of her season.

The discharge has no odour at all.

Thanks

The size of pups after such a short space of time is so incredibly tiny that there is no way you could notice a weight gain from that, no matter how many. :) However you will find that most bitches tend to LOOK bigger with their second litter than they did with their first, even if the number is the same or even less.

Hi

Yes I thought it would be to early to but there is definatly a gain. She is a very small delicate, short haired dog who does not carry any excess weight. Could it just be fluid.
