please can anyone advise me ,
am in 2 minds. my dog is heavily pregnant and vet has gave her a needle to start the ball rolling.

and she said if nothing has happened by tomorrow for my girl to have a c section...

but shes not due till tomorrow.. is this right??

should i wait or should i take her..?

the vet tried to take her in at 11.oo and do one 2day but i said can i wait and see
how she went on the needle to induce her.

any help or comment please!!

Hi,

Did the vet say why she induced her before her due date?  Is there something wrong with her and/or the way her pregnancy is progressing?

Why did you take her to the vets in the first place?

Just trying to find out some background info as any advice will be useless without it.

Well the pros are not having any problems delivering naturally.  If she is having problems or has a very large litter it may be that she can't contract very well.  I had to have a c section for one of my bitches years ago as she was carrying a lot of pups and the vet likened it to trying to chew with your mouth crammed full of toffee

The cons are definitely the risk of the anasthetic.  But to be honest they're so good nowadays it's better than it used to be.  There is still a risk though, as with any anasthetic.  Also some bitches have a slight problem accepting their pups after they've come round but this again is not common.

I agree with the other poster and would follow your vets' advice.

I would advise you go on your vets advice, after all, they can see the dog and know the history - unlike folk on a forum :)

Hi it sounds like everything is fine to me, she's just getting ready for the big day,if she were in actual labour she would be trying to push a pup out,from what you said it just sems like she's having some prelabour and that's quite normal in the last week,if she's eating and drinking I see no reason to jump the gun and get a section after all it's not even her due date yet
I would even give her a few days past her due date as long as she is not in any distress.
My dog is pregnant right now and is due in a few days and she's HUGE this is going to be a very large litter, she's sleeping all the time and not quite her normal self, but that's to be expected during the last week she has started nesting and showing signs of prelabour so I expect she will have them in a few more days,the best thing you can do is don't panic cause it will stress her when she knows your upset.

My last litter was born by a c section. The poor bitch couldn't push as there were too many pups and one got stuck across the birth canal, stopping any others from escaping ;) If your vet recommends a c section it is for a very good reason. Good luck :)

i agree, i know shes heavily pregnant,
i took her to see a vet my grandads friend before and he gave her an internal and he said her vagina
is not open enough for her to have pups and not to worry about c section
unless its ness. as her pups are ok, and shes still dry.

but i gota go my normal vets 9.20 so il know more.
As my gurl has been a few times and they havnt done one internal
just keep saying shes heavily pregnant and to bring her in for a c section.

Iam just going to let nature take its course now, and see what happens
am just a lil worried if she can deliver a large litter.

i hope my vets arnt giving my a c section just to (shut me up)

I really think you should talk to your vets if you are at all concerned about their advice. I cannot stress enough that you should not be listening to advice on a forum, from unqualified folk who cannot even see the dog. Its too delicate a time to doubt your vets advice. If you don't trust them then I suggest you find another vet :)

am going tomorrow and am going to have a good talk with them,
as the weekends been a bit hectic with it only being for emergancies.

just worried that your vet isnt after the cash aC section would bring I bet thier are some rough vets out thier as thier are in any profession...god forbid..

Didn't the vet give the bitch an injection though to try and start her off? Sounds like they were about right to me :)

As far as I was informed a bitch sahould not be given Oxytocin until she is fuly dilated.  As with msot dogs it is impossible to tell due to the shape and length of the genital tract this woudl normally not be doen utnil at least oen pup had been born.

I do know that they will give injections of Calcium which can be helpful durign wyhelping.

oh i dont know, they said it will make her go in to labour.

As Brainless says calcium gluconate is sometimes given as an induction, could this have been what your vet gave?

my bitch is doing very well, the puppies are lil starvers..
she had 7 in the houe and i took her vet as she didnt pass last plecenta
and she had another 2 there,

i was very suprised as they are a 1lb in weight so i thought maybe 5-6

Only thing is my bitch not keeping puppies poo.

So glad to hear that all went OK and that she didn't need a c-section after all :rolleyes:  As others have said Oxytocin shouldn't be given until they have dliated or that's what my vet always told me years ago, it's to help labour to be moved that step further when it's already started but nothings really happening not to begin the proceedings :d

Excellent, I've also heard oxytocin shouldn't be given until the bitch is fully dilated. Glad she didn't need the expensive and traumatic operation! This site, and the stories my breeder friends tell, really make me lose faith in vets!!

Remember, very few vets are dog breeders, and so the vast majority only have information from books, and have never witnessed a normal whelping. ;)

I've lost track of this thread a bit, did the OP actually say it was Oxytocin that was given?  Aren't there some other drugs that can be given to induce labour?

only prob am having is my girl hasnt got much milk, so am hand rearing the puppies.
i can see little milk is there but not enough to feed 9 lil starving pups.
how often do i need 2 feed them ?

is it to late for her milk to come in..?
the pups are sucking like mad at her, so shes getting the stimulation.

Milk is produced on a supply and demand basis, if you feed them then the bitch won't produce milk.  for teh first 3 days at least they shoudlb e suckling almost constantly to bring the milk supply in.  I wouldn't expect to see much milk, only a few drops on a teat if squeezed.

I wouldn't expect to see full mammary glands until you are at the stage of feeds being at longer intervals.

Let the pusp feed from the bitch as much as possible and plug in any smaler pups as often as possible when there are spare teats and others asleep.

If pups gain weioght then the bitch has milk, but if weoight remains static for a day or so no need to worry just keep the pusp suckling more.

the bitch needs as much fluids as you can get into her, and I ahve found that this is helped by soaking her food throughly (also umproved food intake if dry food is uncomfortable to eat because of chapped lips from cleaning pups).
