Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / is it me ?
- By Trevor [gb] Date 14.01.06 07:44 UTC
Just got off the phone from one of my 'puppy' buyers ( pup is now in fact nearly 2 years old ;)) -conversation went like this :

" Tyler stole the fish fillets I left on the side in the kitchen - what can I do to stop him stealing food I leave out ? "

" Umm - don't leave stuff out  where he can reach it"

" but he does'nt eat fish"

" he's a dog - he'll eat ANYTHING !!!"

She's a lovely owner but ............is it me ??

LOL  Some people forget they are dogs and not people. Bless. Tyler obviously DOES like fish!!! Anything else he can get as a freebie.

Not strictly true, my mum's springer refused to eat anything to do with pork, she would turn her nose up at everything from smoked bacon to roast pork, we just assumed she had some sort of Jewish faith and couldn't eat for religous reasons :D.  However now she has reached old age she has abandoned her religious faith and will now eat anything she can reach.

I had a very similar converstaion with my daughter the other day about our dog over a satsuma, She said "Honey won't eat it she doesn't like them", I said "it won't stop her trying it" and guess what

I met a lady in the supermarket who didnt eat pork products!  I thought this was bizzare as we have to empty the frying pan or Molly will jump up to the cooker to eat bacon fat when we have been cooking it.  I always pour it on the food as they love it.

No I dont think you are the only one with nutty puppy owners.  I had one lady who allowed her dog to mount the kids and asked me what I did when mine did it.  She was shocked when I told her mine didnt because if they did they would get a quick squirt of water and told no!   The problem is you only have a very short space of time to get to know these owners and no matter how normal they seem and how much time you spend telling them things they should and shouldnt allow they just dont seem to listen

lol - mine will eat anything if they steal it!

If I offered them a bit of apple they would turn there nose up - did not stop them getting all the apples & munching them though!

:-) Not just you I have had some classics too.  I think common sense no longer exists and people expect dogs, to act like people and not dogs!

Once I dropped some cherry tomatoes on the floor and my two were running around with tomatoes in their mouths, not wanting to eat them, but not wanting to drop them in case the other dog got them - it was hilarious! :-D

My boy will eat things just because he can - I always offer him a bit of whatever I have; I know he doesn't like proper chips (he likes the crispy little bits rather than whole ones), or brocolli, but he will still eat them if they're on offer - takes him a few goes though!

We're in a bungalow and it took quite a while for my lot to consistently shut the doors to the their rooms.  One day I saw the dog coming out of son's room chewing slowly.  I opened her mouth to see what it was but before I could see anything the smell of her breath gave away the fact that she had stolen chewing gum, the whole packet still wrapped up :D
- By bint [gb] Date 14.01.06 18:42 UTC
I've had the chewing gum one - the packet was still in my waterproof bottoms even after he'd chewed it. What a mess!
As for asking the breeder stupid questions, I informed ours that our pup had what looked like conjunctivitis a few days after we got him & she proceeded to state on her kennel chat forum that our pup had conjunctivitis, probably due to travelling in a draft on the way home. I was furious because we have air conditioning in the car & had NOT sat him beside an open window as she suggested. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest

My dog will eat anything we offer if he likes it, but would never take anything from the kitchen side or table as what ever he gets comes from our hands. Sorry if i have misread the post as i have been out tonight. But maybe they have fed there dog from a certain place and the dog thinks it's ok to take food from there.

No it isn't only you. :) Presumably this is a Belgian?? I think they should have their own sport for the olympics, the americans call it "counter surfing". AMAZING what they can reach, and what they DO take given half a chance -stuff they'd never look at if you GAVE it to them.........
- By Carla Date 15.01.06 00:58 UTC
Thats the one good thing about my danes, although they can reach, they don't steal. Except for chicken. Oh, and cheese. And they'd have mince away if I left it on view. And crisps :D :D :D

:P

My male Belgian once took a lipstick - I came home to find his mouth covered in what at first sight I thought was blood!!! and was thankful to find it was just lipstick. He was such a clown

Mine steals anything in reach but spits out celery and prawns! He actually nibbled the breadcrumbs off some scampi but left what was inside. Likes fish though!

>He actually nibbled the breadcrumbs off some scampi but left what was inside

LOL. that reminds me of our dear old campbell, he used to nick the OH's cheese n tomato sarnies at work. He'd sit there carefully eating away, and just when you thought he'd finished eating one.... he'd spit out the slices of tomato! :D
- By digger [gb] Date 16.01.06 17:30 UTC
My old boy - Digger, used to receive salad sarnies in the same way - but spit out the cucumber!  Crab sticks were treated in much the same manner....

My dog would eat absolutely anything I was eating in his effort to "share".  But if I put it in his dish for his supper it would be there until the maggots got it.  He only wants it if I'm having it.  And as for him sharing his bonios and doggy chomp with me?   Errrr No.

Nipper would do anything at all for a lettuce leaf that looks as if it might miss the salad bowl. Except eat it if it does, of course! ;)
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 17.01.06 09:15 UTC
I used to help at a puppy class and you would be amaized how many people came in week after week complaining that the pup had eaten another pair of shoes. One woman lost 6 pairs of designer shoes including 'Jimmy choos' before the penny dropped that she had to put them away

Me Im having my kitchen rebuilt with extra deep work surfaces, maybe an expensive option but there is a limit to how much food you can hide in the microwave :D
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 17.01.06 14:05 UTC
I just use a stair gate now! also good for my cupboards too as the kids can't get to the food any more
- By huskypup [al] Date 17.01.06 20:57 UTC
It is absolutely amazing how much dogs can stretch their necks to get at food on the kitchen counter.  I've know a few dogs who just couldn't resist butter even thought it made them sick as a parrot.   :)  Have health marg now and the interest is just not the same - lol
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 18.01.06 08:08 UTC
It is something to do with animal fat. One of ours has a 'thing' for certain brands of soap and will eat a whole bar given an opportunity  The other quite quickly worked out that she could grab the greaseproof that stuff was cooling on and pull the food towards her. Dont you just LOVE them?
- By CherylS Date 18.01.06 09:13 UTC
I've only caught my trying to get food of kitchin counter once. I walked into the kitchen and she was stretching to get the chicken I had just got out of the oven.  I was so shocked I screamed, which startled her and I've never seen her do it since and not seen any evidence that she's tried.
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 18.01.06 09:23 UTC
If only it was that easy :headinhands: She knows full well that it is not allowed, so she just makes sure that she does it quitely and when Im not looking
