I have just joined Genesreunited and boy is this addictive, especially trying to get the brainbox working trying to remember grandparents names, maiden names, dob etc, remember i'm 61 and some details I dont have, and have also lost touch with lots of cousins in the family. Any of you done this before I am trying to get information of the Scottish Census, the English one is easy to get, but, not the Scottish one. Help!!!!!

My father has been doing this for years. I know he goes to a place in Dundee, and also to Edinburgh. I will e-mail him and ask for the details for you. :)

If you want to do it over the internet try:

[link]http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/[/link]

There are excellent records on here and you could spend a fortune :D

I've been researching mine for about 8/9 years - My father's family are Scottish so have done quite a bit there. If you have any particular questions PM me as may be able to point you in the right direction :) BEWARE - a very addictive hobby :D

Have joined Scotlandspeople and a couple of others, but will just have to learn how to get round these sites, managed to get my dads d.o.b.(he died when I was 18) my brother had birth and death certs, so got that one, now to research my mothers side of the family, I do have a cousin in the North East so will try and contact him and see if he can help.  Its very addictive, ive been on most of the afternoon trying to find folk. thanks for your help so far.

Can I suggest that you join a mailing list for the county that your family came from :)

[link]http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/SCT/[/link]

It can be very useful and you can ask either general questions or questions specific to your family.

I have spoken to my dad (well, by e-mail!)

He goes to Tay Valley Family History Society at 179-181 Princes Street, Dundee, DD4 6DQ. Phone number 01382 461845. They are open 10-4 and 7-9 Monday and Thursday Nights. You have to join and it costs £12 per year.

You can also go to New Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh. I don't know the cost, I'm afraid.

he also gave me 2 web sites. www.Familysearch.co.uk which is free and www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which can be quite costly. He has said that you try to get as much info as you can before going to these places as that will help you find the right relatives. Hope this helps.

I tried researching MIL family particularly her fathers side it was so damn difficult though, as she has very little information about him.  The onlt things she has to go on are his birthplace when he got married and when he died .  We have looked into it with births deaths and marriages but still nothing:confused:.  He must be registered somewhere.

The censuses are a great souce of information, especially if your family didnt move about too much. Had loads of trouble with my dads side as they were illiterate and I dont think wanted to spend the money to register BMDs! Also there were over 600 'stewarts' in one london parish in 1901. Census also give you trade which is a good double check as often trades were passed father to son. Trade can also explain why all males die young etc. I agree that it is adictive, especially the bit that you cna do on line as it is so easy, sadly I am now running out of records on line as I am back to 1800 and have to go looking in parish records which is much more time consuming. Finally the BBC website has some good tips and blank forms for you to use.

Good luck and remember to document everything and keep your papers organised, you wouldnt believe how many you get.
