My 5 year old french mastiff constantly farts it smells quite bad, he also get a rumbling tummy now and again. He is currently on pedgiree and chudleys (mixed). We have only had him for just over a week now and am in the process of changing his food to find out which food will make the problem lessen.
Am about to start changing him over to laughing dog complete and will then try nutro if that doesn't work. I have to do this gradually as he apparently had a gastric dilation a few years back which made his tummy rather sensative.
I have read on posts here that live yogurt may help, if so do I just buy the normal plain variety and mix it with his food? also how much do I add, a couple of tablespoons?
I personally think that the pedigree crum is to blame, I detest the stuff.
Hopefully in the next few weeks shall see an improvement with diet change and live yoghurt.

Hi,
Normal plain Bio Yoghurt is the one (I get large cartons in Morrisons) it doesn't have to be expensive :) Just a tablespoon or so on top of the food, doesn't even need to be mixed in as they seem to love it :) Good luck with changing foods, hope you find one that suits.

What was he being fed when you got him? It would be worth sticking just to that for a couple of weeks till he's over the emotional upheaval of changing homes, changing drinking water etc. The stress of that alone can cause temporary digestive upsets which will rectify themselves.
When you do change his food take about a fortnight to change brands then stick with one for at least a month before you decide whether or not it suits him.
:)
He was on the pedigree and chudleys mix before we got him. I shall be taking the changeover in food slowly as I mentioned.
His poo is so soft and has been since we got him, the coal biscuits we got him help a little but not much.
Would like to get to the stage where his poo is firm and the wind minimised for his comfort. I do not mind the farting but it cannot be that comfortable farting all day long.

I have found that since switching my lot over to the barf diet, they are a lot less windy (hardly ever, in fact) and their motions are very firm.
The live yoghurt seems to be working, he is farting much less now. :)

When I used to clip dogs I always knew which ones were on pedigree as they all farted a lot!! Mine never fart or if they do it's not smelly :d The only time that they seem to is when they are pregnant and boy they can be windy then :d :d
