Hi everyone

Sorry but I have got to brag about my puppy who is coming up to 8 months next week.  He has done so well in obedience he has now moved up a class.  Apart from his excellent heel work. he sits stays, down stays, does sendaways and in his new class (had 2 lessons) he is learning scent work, had to find his ball and then had to find me, done it each time with gusto, he has also learnt to "Speak" when he finds things, he also stayed in the down position while I went out of sight for about 2 mins, I  am so proud of my baby.  By the way he doesnt work for treats but is sooooo ball driven he will do anything for it.  Now I am afraid I have to admit to the down side, obedient as he is he still likes to lunge at cars and unfortunately he takes notice of nothing not even his beloved ball...Hopefully he will grow out of it.

Well done with your boy, its a great feeling of achievement when you get to see all your hard work training tested out :)

I started proper classes with my 13 month old last week and he was a real super star, we do most of our training one to one but he coped really well with a packed class and we even were allowed to stay for the advanced class and he did a 4 min out of sight down stay..I grinned like a fool I was soo proud!

Good luck, are you doing the Good citizen scheme awards or aiming for real obedience levels?

Emily

Hi Emily

Well I would like to do the Good citizen awards, but I am aiming for working trials, his dad comes from a 100% working background and thank goodness it seems to have rubbed off on my little boy.

Hi Kizzy

Congrats, sounds like you have a really good puppy there, what breed?

I have a 9 mth choc lab who we took to puppy classes & she did really well, does the basic commands, sit, wait, down, paw (which is my fave!) & she does a bit of retrieving but always for a treat!  Would you recommend we find some obedience classes as well?  We have no intention of breeding or showing etc she is just a family pet but I know as lab she needs a lot of stimulation.  She is a good dog, no complaints just wondering if she would benefit from them...

Any thoughts? Does anyone know of any classes in the Notts area?

Hi Gemma

My puppy is a GSD.  We are fortunate to be able to go training twice a week. The trainer is a local man who has kept GSD`s for 40 years, in my opinion (and others who attend his classes) he is one of the best there is.  He has 3 GSD`s of his own the youngest being just 14 weeks, he is amazing with all dogs.  We are lucky to do the training outside which i always think is best.  But the most amazing thing is it doesnt cost a penny, he just loves doing it.  Obviously if your lab enjoys doing it then there is no harm in carrying on obedience, we have a few labs at training who absolutely adore it and do really well.  Also what I think is a good thing is that he splits the young dogs up, so my puppy has always been with older dogs at training as there are far less distractions, if puppies get together they are more interested in playing than working. Sorry cant help you regarding classes in Notts I live in Essex.

Well done Kizzy and feel free to brag! My Cav boy impressed me this week at pet training, ok he's got his Gold test so jolly well ought to be able to do a recall with other dogs working at the same time, but not all the dogs could do it, and I was still really pleased, when I look back and remember the idiot puppy who used to charge off into the distance to say hello to every other dog within 20 miles!! :-D

There's help for my puppy yet then!!!  I took Cinders to puppy classes shortly after we 1st got her, & the classes finished for the summer, come September when they started again they were full.  So I've been waiting for a space, eagerly, as whenever I walk her off the lead I am always keeping my eyes peeled for dogs, that she can see & put her back on her lead before she does, as I'm sure she'll leg it to the other side of the park to play with them.  When she's on her lead & a dog walks passed, I'm trying to hold her back, & a miserable old cow really annoyed me yesterday, when she just said to her dog "walk by" without even a good morning!

Anyway, she had her 1st class lastnight.  She wasn't too bad, so hopefully soon I'll be able to let her off the lead & she'll come back to me, without me having to chase after her...
