Can anyone help, a friend of a friend has fallen in love with american bulldogs, they want to know what health checks the breed have done so that they can obviously check out any potential puppies mother and fathers history.
I have told them to look on the net on AB clubs or maybe ask a vet.
They also wanted to know what the breed was like with children they have two one is 6 and the other 10, i didn't want to give her any false info so i said i would try to find out

They are not a Kennel club recognised breed and aare not recognised by the American Kennel club.

I have seent hat some have been hip scored and trhe results published in the KC breed records supplements, and the results suggest that this should certainly be done.

Problem with a breed that isn't recognised is finding a typical example and a good breeder.

From what I have read I would not think them an ideal bred for children unless the parents are very expereinced with dogs as they appear to be a strong breed with dominant traits.

I persoanlly woudl advise them to look at either a bullmastiff from a breeder recomended by the breed club that has parents health tested or a not disimilar breed like a boxer.

If you look at the back of the monthly dog magazines they usually have contact numbers of AB breeders.

There are several in the UK that are being trained for Schutzhund and you might find that if you contact the British Schutzhund Association via one of the registered clubs, they might be able to put you in touch with people who are experienced with the breed.

I think they might be better of with a well bred SBT if this is the type of dog they like rather than an AB but that is only my opinion.
