Our bitch has been mated with another. This took place three weeks ago. She has been quite lethargic over the last week and this morning we noticed some bleeding. Any advice as we are new to breeding and can't find any details of this in any of our research literature.

Hi,

i have the book of the bitch, there isn't anything in it regarding bleeding this early, however it does say that from abot the 35th day ( i know it hasn't been this long) there is likely to be a discharge of opaque mucas from the vagina, this is a fairly reliable indication of pregnancy. ANY BLOOD STAINED OR COLOURED DISCHARGE IS A REASON TO CONSULT A VET. If your worried at all just ring your vet it's better to be safe than sorry, i mated my bitch on the 3rd of Jan so i know how you feel waiting. hope all is well.

What research literature do you have so that information isn't repeated?

The research books i have are book of the bitch (new edition) and i also have breeding dogs for dummies.

The literature we have was a given to us by our vet. It is photo copies of relevent information from the vets own manuals.

I would get her to the vet as bleeding is not normal.

This happened to me last year and ended up being a medical emergency. I almost lost my baby girl because of pyometra but fortunately we were able to save her with an emergency spay. It was very close for her because we were told not to worry too much as long as she is eating and drinking. By the time she lost her appetite (she's a Lab so that is often the last thing to go with those guys :) ) she had a closed cervix pyometra and was going septic. She had also been bred three weeks earlier. Please take your girl to the vet for a scan right away. Good luck.
