Hi all how many predigree gen's can you go back to linebreed

Linebreeding means breeding together related animals. I prefer not to go closer than at least one mutual grandparent, but with several mutual great-grandparents. 'Inbreeding' is simply a more extreme form of the same thing, involving closer relationships.

I call line-breeding deliberately breeding back to a specific ancestor (or ancestors) that had specific features that one wants to perpetuate, was an overall excellent example of the breed and preferably was known to be prepotent. Thus I'd say I line breed on Shenval Druid who was top stud for three years despite being very lightly used (and despite never being shown as he lost the end of his tail in a puppyhood accident  )

Mating related stock, eg with mutual grand-parents, without trying to go back to any specific ancestor is just what I'd call a degree of inbreeding.

But then there are no hard and fast definitions in this :)

This gives a very good explanation. :)

Thank you Jeangenie i understand line breeding much better now so if there is more the one gt gt gt grandparent in both predigree's in common that is linebreeding

mm well I gues that would be line breeding, but doubling up on one dog so far back is unlikely to bring that dogs good points to the fore, assuming that is your intention, as there will be a lot of other dogs there as well having an effect.

This thread fits nicely inot a conversation held at a show at the weekend, when possible matings were being discussed - just want to point out the obvious really, which was missed by those having the conversation - check out the whole pedigree, don't just get fixated on the dog/dogs you are line breeding on/to!  Look out for other dogs who repeat across the proposed pedigree, who may not posses such favourable traits!  It is all to easy to fixated on a great or good dog, and miss out one or more whose attributes are not desirable to double up on!
bye
