Last night we were preparing a meal for a small celebration. We were only out of the kitchen for a few minutes but in that time our old deerhound bitch dined on two thick fillet steaks, button mushrooms (she left a few of those) and half a pint of double cream. To add insult to injury, she washed it down with two glasses of very nice red wine and had a substantial tot of malt whisky that is even older than her to finish off. She didn't even tip over the glasses or knock the cream carton on the floor, but we knew it was her because the evidence was on her moustaches - and on the smell of her breath!

She has been thieving on a lesser scale for the last year now. She only does it if we are out of the kitchen and we have never caught her at it. Up to that she never stole food.

What would you do with an old dog who has been perfectly well trained throughout her life but has now decided that the rules don't appy to HER anymore?

LOL! That reminds me of my foundation bitch who ate three £5 notes. We had friends round that day and one of them kept pumping her tail up and down. He said he was hoping for the jackpot! :D

My oldie (13½) has decided that instructions no longer apply to her. We call her and get ignored - call crossly and get a look which clearly says "Yes, I heard you the first time, I'll be with you in a moment!" and she finishes her sniff ....

You've gotta love 'em, even if they are infuriating! :D

It's like I was saying on here yesterday, humans getting old means people don't challenge you anymore.  Bless her, she's been good all these years and she's decided she wants to try all the things she's been denied.  She'll be parachuting next and riding out on a Harley bike :D

Did you send her an invitation to your celebration?  If not, it might be revenge :D

She was invited to attend but not to dine as she's already had her own dinner - which evidently wasn't half as good as ours :D

That reminds me od a few years ago when our dogs got the whole turkey on xmas morning

We were going away boxing day so had little else in the house - we ended up with sausages & all the trimmings :rolleyes:

Not quite kibble and gravy. We had the spuds ready so we added some bacon. :)

How old is she?  Perhaps she knows she's coming back as a human and is trying out the goodies in advance You'd better watch out what you say about her as you might be coming back as her pets :D :D

My GSDs father once ate a whole sherry trifle he looked so cute as he had a black face and cream all over his whiskers and he was not even ill after it.We let him of as he was twelve years old at the time and what else can you do but laugth it of.

Can I just add a little warning to everyone to be very careful when anything like this happens (dog stealing large amounts of food not intended for it) as it can be very dangeorus. My elderly Cavalier is like this, it's like with age he thinks he's allowed anything. Well 2 years ago my husband and I got married, and the following weekend my children were going to finish up some of the left over food, including the wedding cakes. Rufus kept getting slipped food without my knowledge, and he also stole without me seeing.  A few hours later we started to notice that he looked odd. Hadn't he got a LOT fatter all of a sudden??? Then he started wobbling and couldn't walk. We had to rush him to the vet and the vet said it was touch and go, the next few hours would determine whether he survived or not -he had over eaten THAT much. His stomach was on the verge of going into torsion and the vet was considering trying to empty it, when he started throwing up, and then continued all night. The vet phoned to ask if he'd eaten a lot of cake as he saw a LOT of icing in the vomit, yuck!! Thankfully Rufus was okay and could come home the next day, but it was a very close call indeed.

My Max was once so well behaved we found him asleep with his nose right next to a plate with two lamb chops on it - untouched.  I was astonished!

In the last years of his life we'd have thought the plate had been washed and dried - the kids slipping him bits, and dropping bits didn't help his food training.

he once tried *eating* a glass as a pup - he was happily crunching it up - no bits were missing, and no blood.  My heart nearly stopped!

Oh poor Rufus. Thank goodness he was ok. :-(

She's 13½ and there is no question that she'll be back as a human! This one is a human already, she just finds four paw drive and wearing a permenant fur coat convenient. :D
