does any one give there dogs the raw hide bones and does it make there teeth bleed

I used to give them to my dog but they are not very good for them. They never made her gums bleed. How old is your dog, if he is young he might be teething?

i used to give them before i found out about all the preservtives and stuff to keep it pearly white.
but when i did i used to find blood on them so yes i suppose they do make their gums bleed.

the dog is 9 years old just had her teeth done by vet he as told me they are good to give the dogs for there teeth

i prefer to use pigs ears now. if eaten fairly slowly they do the same sort of job.
but no chew will ever clean their teeth properly.
oh another good teeth cleaner is a raw chicken wing

Dont see how a rawhide chew is good for teeth, soon as they get wet they go like chewing gum, all soft and sticky.
Chicken wings are good teeth cleaners though!

agree with theemx anything with a raw bone cleans the teeth but did you also know that hard biscuits do the same so some hard kibble of what ever brand your dog is best on will do the same because dogs dont chew it up they chrunch in half and then swallow

I didnt know dogs could have chichen wings, I was told the small brittle bones were dangerous?
i think its bad for them if they're cooked
You are correct - cooked chicken bones are LETHAL, but mine have raw chicken wings (as part of a barf diet) every morning for their breakfast. They adore them!

Bones and raw food, or biologically appropriate raw feeding.

would you reccommend this diet?
I feel such a dunce, I didn't know rawhide chews were bad. I thought they were a good natural option. So are pigs ears better?
Tansy is 5 months and has rawhide chews.....but I buy the dark coloured ones rather than the bleached white version. She is a rather destructive chewer, so for me these chews keep her from chewing something else!! She only has one now and again anyway. Pigs ears are quite fatty, and Tansy has them too, but only about once a fortnight. :-) :-)
mine get the odd rawhide. They have a huge bone at the mo, but they've had it for over a month-it takes that long to get through! Mine have never had any adverse effects, but then they don't get vast quantities of the stuff. They regularly get a pigs trotter or a pigs ear....tripe sticks (or sh*t sticks as i prefer to call them, given that they stink like it :D), but i prefer to give them a raw bone if i can.
I give Tyler a mixture of rawhide, knuckle bones, pigs ears and other chewy things and his gums have never bled, i think it's like everything give it to them in moderation. Tyler is the same he has had a big bone from pets at home since xmas day and still hasn't managed to munch through it. We also give him carrots for teeth cleaning and also some minty chews for teeth from pets at home, wether they work or not i don't know but they do smell fresh and minty!! But i don't think anything works as well as getting a toothbrush and giving them a good old brush.

You can get 100% beef rawhide in packs which are kinda like wide strips. Some are 'flavoured' but if you are going to get them I'd suggest sticking to the unflavoured. I give our little girl these as they are natural, have no preservatives/additives and keeps her from chewing shoes etc which we know she did before we got her - she loves it and one lasts her a week

I wouldn't ever give rawhide chews, regardless of colour, size and shape as they can easily cause blockages if a large soft piece is swallowed :( I've heard of a couple of fatalities with them, numerous near misses and had a scary incident with one of my own dogs too - so rawhide in any form and also smoked pigs' ears are banned completely in our household ;)
Far better IMO to give recreational fresh raw bones or a stuffed kong / buster cube to prevent inappropriate chewing and use raw chicken wings or Fragaria if required for teeth cleaning properties.
Regards Teri :)

if you search google for dog recipes you can make your own tasty natural snacks and teeth cleaners and then atleast you know exactly what is in it. I always just by steer bones at the butchers but if you wanted to go to the trouble of backing your dog some treats just have a look thru some dog recipe sites

I ditto everything Teri said :)
Those things are banned in my house too! I have had 2 choking incidences with rawhide in the past,it was the most terrifying experience! They turn into a gluggy gluey mess after they've been chewed on for a while, some dogs swallow whole chunks(like mine did) which can cause life threating blockages and choking,i doubt very much these things digest easily and/or quickly :( Then there are the chemicals, preservatives, fat and all the other crap rawhide and pigs ears are lathered in. I can not honestly see ANY healthful benefits to giving them :(
I've been feeding raw bones for years and i have never had any problems, however i have seen many problems with those artificial chews :(

Me too Hailey, except I can't give raw bones or even those dehydrated ones. Everything goes down so quickly I'm sure large chunks are being swallowed whole. Strangely though, she does chew carrots, beets and any other hard fruit or vegetable I've tried.

They get nasty and slimey in a heartbeat and are too easy for the dog to swallow a chunk and that could cause an obstruction. Plus many of them are chemically preserved. Recently I found a rawhide buried under the mattress in my old bed. Since I haven't purchased any in over 2 years, it was at least that old. So why did it still look BRAND new??? Scarey what's in those things.
jetstone jewel you need to find some big arse recreational bones, ones that are bigger than his head, which will make it impossible for him to swallow whole ;)

Hi,
I had, well blade actually

had a bad experience with Raw hide over the christmas period. my mil gave his brother a hide chew whilst we were downstairs in her pub to keep him occupied, she then dittoed this with blade as he was there, not knowing that we don't give him hide!! Well the results were appauling poor mite! he had eaten the whole thing in a space of couple of hours and all during the night he had severe diarheoa and for the next 3 days. The first day was like water poor mite! So probably good if your dog has constipation but other than that I would steer well clear.
Pleased to say he is all better now :-D
Em
We used to give them to Breeze, but only when supervised. We stopped giving them to her because they made her sick. She would be fine util she got to the end, but then she would try to eat the large bits all in one go, and she would throw them up.
Not giving her anymore. She has loads of toys instead.

I've always given my dogs rawhide chews. They have one almost every day. Never ever had a problem. I guess from what other people have been saying I must be lucky. :)

Some dogs like raw hide some dogs don't. Some dogs have an "adverse reaction", some dogs don't. They
can be dangerous due to the "small chewed-down pieces" but if your dog chews it 'properly' then they are fine :)
The moral is don't go for the 'cheap tat' and be vigilant while your dog has access to it. Give sparingly. Offer "alternatives including vegetable and meat-flavored bones made from potato starch, bones made from extremely strong rubber infused with flavorings, and corn-starch based bones also infused with flavor.".
Its just common sense really isn't it
