Just had a phone call from my daughter, in Sri Lanka, to say that Jared has broken his femur in two places, whilst they were boogie boarding in Galle. This happened on Saturday, and yesterday he was transferred to Colombo, about 4 hours drive away, for an operation. Apparently they are worried about the fact that he has broken it very close to the neck of the femur where it goes into the hip socket. Sarah is still in Galle, with Ella, whilst Chris is in Colombo with Jared. So thoughts & prayers are needed please.

Have heard from Sarah again: it is a really serious break to the head of the femur as it goes into the hip socket (I can picture it, thanks to all these hip xrays) - and at 8 years old, his hip hasnt yet finished growing - so they have had to compromise on the angle - at the moment.
He is in a full body cast - from chest right down to right ankle and to left knee.
Margot

Good grief, poor little boy! :( He must be terribly upset. My best wishes to everyone and hope he can be flown home soon.
Oh dear thats awful L/M

hope it heals without any probs poor lad, he`ll be immobile for a fair while :(
My daughter broke her femur when she was young, only 3, they put her in traction as it wasn`t as bad as Jareds & it healed no probs.
Sending lots of positive thoughts your way Margot xx
I hope this little boy is better soon

I had a compund fracture of the femur when I was 13 (was hit by a car) - had to spend almost 4 months in hospital in traction :( At least nowadays they can pin the breaks - although it is worrying at his age, as with lots of growing it's never clear whether the leg will grow at the same rate. I was fortunate and my leg is only very slightly shorter than the other - hardly anything :) But, I was older, although hadn't gone through my teenage growth spurt. Down side is that I'm starting to get arthritic twinges as (as in Jared's case) the break was close to the neck of femur and the interruption to the blood supply can cause the head of femur to deteriorate :(
A similar thing happened to a friend's son recently (although he was 19) - he broke his femur badly when snow-boarding in Australia. He hadn't any health insurance (as he was just supposed to be there on holiday visiting a friend) and his parents had to pay for the helicopter flight off the mountain. He also had to fly back from Australia, when just out of hospital, in anordinary economy seat :(
I'm sure that Jared will get wonderful treatment, Margot. At that age he'll be running around and back to normal by the summer :)

How awful, wishing him a speedy recovery, and lets hope he gets home soon too.

Oh no poor little boy. Was bad enough when my son had a very bad break of his arm and ended up in surgery at the age of 9 and 1 1/2 months. I cant imaging what must be going through his parents minds at the moment.
(((((((((HUGS))))))))
I hope he makes a speedy recovery, at that age young bones heal quickly.

Thanks for all the good wishes - at least he is in an excellent hospital and everything seems to be going well - he may well be discharged from hospital in 7-10 days days, and Cathay Pacific have said that, provided the medical authorities agree, there should be no problem in getting him home to Hong Kong with the rest of the family (in fact the General Manager of Cathay Pacific at Colombo airport called in to see them at the hospital, because his wife had an appointment there today). I must say that the service you get out in Asia far exceeds anything you get over here - I know that they're covered by insurance but even so, can you imagine the manager of any airline here in Europe, calling in to see you in hospital????
I may go out there in Feb, because they're due to leave Honkers at the end of March/beginning of April to go to US, and Sarah was supposed to be going to find them a house in February. Oh the joys of being a long haul grandparent
(PS - spoke to him in hospital - and he was very proud of the fact that they have left "holes" in the plaster, front & back - and he could still manage a big poo

LOL, Margot - he's obviously 'bearing up' :D :D Glad that he's getting first-class treatment - at least that must be a comfort for your daughter and SIL :) Try not to worry too much (I'm sure that's difficult :) ).
Best wishes
Daisy xx

Bodily functions are working perfectly ok then :D Bless his little heart.
I think children take the things that happen to them much better than we do.

Update :
Just heard that they were able to fly back to Hong Kong yesterday - Jared was kept overnight in hospital in Hong Kong, this morning, they removed his staples (goodness knows where they were), checked the plaster cast, and let him home this morning.
I don't think its going to be easy for them - keeping an active 8-yr old occupied when he's flat on his back all day - but hopefully, by Chinese New Year, Hong Kong doctors say he might be able to be put into a smaller cast (at the moment, its chest to toes right side and to left knee t'other side - oh yes - with two crucial holes :D )

Been speaking to Sarah again today - Jared is at last out of his plaster cast! He has a zimmer frame (which at the moment he is too scared to use) and a wheelchair!
The doctors in Hong Kong are pleased with the way the fractures have healed. and are going to take matters slowly - they are really waiting for Jared to gain his confidence that he can walk before deciding upon what route they will go down as regards physio etc.
Sarah says that there doesn't appear to be much muscle wastage - but he always has been such a skinny-ribs that you couldn't see any muscle in any case.
However, it is progress and now he has a wheelchair, they can go out - he'll be going back to school next week!
Looks as if I might miss Crufts, as I may be flying over to Hong Kong, to act the doting granny (no, I didn't say doddering granny :D ) whilst Sarah has to go to New York to find them schools/house over there for the end of April.
Margot

He must feel so much more comfortable out of the cast! What a relief for you all! :)

Aaaaaaaw Iam sorry to hear that, but glad to hear he's finally out of the cast... :)

Glad he is progressing well ;)
Shame you won't be at Crufts but Hong Kong is a very good alternative especially as who you are going to visit
