Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Malassezia is it hereditary?
- By Chezza77 [gb] Date 08.01.06 19:34 UTC
Hi All

I wonder if you can give me your opinion. I have a perfectly health beautiful BH and I am planning to mate her. She has this but it is under control now. I wanted to know if you think it is hereditary? I heard that it is in all dogs and just sometimes comes out, especially in BH. I don't want to breed her if it is wrong to do so.
Advice would be good.

Thanks

Hi there

Having this problem (along with several others in one of my girls) I would never dream of mating or using a dog that showed any health conditions whats so ever, seeing what my girl has had to go through, I wouldn't want to think any dogs bred by that same dog could possibly pass on these conditions, in my eyes its not fair and shouldn't be ever considered. Saying this my girl was spayed asap, when I finally managed to get her conditions under control.. NOT cured just managed now for the rest of her life.

There was a beautiful 14 week old Shar Pei pup on our local market a couple of weeks ago who had this.  The owners in the few weeks that they'd had her had paid out £600 on vet's bills!

There seems to be a lot of Shar Pei's in our area this last 6 months for some reason, I've never seen so many youngsters, although I must admit one was the most outstanding one I'd ever seen but I don't think they had any papers for her.

Malazzesia Pachydermatis is definitely carried in some lines in Basset Hounds. PLease see the work done by Dr Ross Bond of the Royal Veterinary College. If you have a bitch that has this problem you should never breed from her. It is not fair to pass this problem down to new puppy owners and only continues to spread it further. People seem to like litigation these days and ending up in court could be expensive.

One of my puppies had this and the vets told them it is hereditary and one or other of the parents probably had it - rubbish   None of my dogs have even had dally rash neither had the stud dog and certainly none of the other offspring.  Personally I think it is a bit like eczema.  My husband had it so bad he was hospitalised none of our children had it or his parents or siblings or anyone else in the family.  I know that the owner was told not to breed the bitch and I agree that it is not a good idea and told her to get the bitch speyed.  Personally I would nevr breed with a dog or bitch who showed signs of a skin complaint.

Don't even consider breeding from a bitch with a skin problem. Breeding from a bitch/dog with any health issue is a NO NO.

Passing a problem onto puppies and their owners is simply not fair.  The poor dog/bitch will spend the rest of its life having his/her condition managed/kept under control.
