Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / jwb question
- By Tenno [gb] Date 07.01.06 11:28 UTC
I feed james wellbelloved but I have read that they are changing the recipe.  Does any one know if this is true?

If it is can anyone recommend a good dried hypoallergenic food?

I tried burns when jwb was taken over by mars but my very active dogs started to look very skinny :-(

They are on jwb junior at the moment & that suits all 3 of them but if the ingedents change for the worst I want to find a equivilent food.

They also have a bit of nature diet, sardines, chicken ect everyday but for the main part of the diet I prefer a complete dry food.

Have a look at the Arden Grange Range.  Those with sensitive dogs have found the lamb and Rice and the Salmon one very good.

What have you read about JWB? Just because they are changing the recipe it doesn't necessarily mean for worse.

Just as long as it doesn't stop agreeing with my dog, it's been lovely not having sloppy poo stuck to his feathering any more!!

If JWB suits all of your dogs, then I think you'd be silly to change.  The reports of the ingredients changing are unfounded as far as anything I've heard.  I've contacted them myself and asked them if these rumours are true, and they say no - their ingredients will remain as high quality as they are now.  The only change is at a very high level in the company, by way of JWB being owned by Mars now.  They assured me this would lead to no changes at lower levels or to the food itself.

Keep an eye on the ingredients on the packets - if they change, you will know about it.  If that happens, then is the time to start looking for another food.  Not now when it hasn't happened yet.

If you are determined to change and you have tried Burns, what about Wafcol Hypoallergenic Salmon and Potato.

I haven't hard anything about JWB changing, but I'm at Manchester show next week and will ask the rep.  I'm sure it will only be a change for the better as JWB has such a good reputation.

If you have a look at all the decent foods who have been sold off or partnered or whatever in the past, they have ALL changed for the worse, cant see why JWB would be any different :( Mars is a huge company that has huge profits, they can make their profits even higher by replacing good expensive quality ingredients with poor cheaper ones. They cleverly bought a company with a good reputation hoping their loyal customers will stick with them no matter what,i hope iff or more to the point when, they change their ingredients people will vote with their feet !

Sorry to sound cynical but i've seen it happen many times before,i really do hope i'm wrong in this case :p

not so pedigree however

Jo what do you mean?

Very true! I'm not a fan! :)

Yup, don't worry, IF the food changes, I'll be one of the first to go!

I have to say that I prefer JWB for puppies.  Burns is a great food, but I've found that mine don't do so well on it when puppies - they tend not to put weight on and I also disagree with Burns' recommendation to move to their adult food from 6 months - I feel this is too young, for a large breed.  So, I like to feed JWB until they are over a year old, and then I often switch to Burns adult foods, depending on what suits the individual dog (some are better staying on JWB).

Hi,
JWB and Royal Canin are both marketed by Crown Pet Foods in Yeovil, hence the reply from RC.

~Thanx  for all your opinions

This is what worries me -

"If you have a look at all the decent foods who have been sold off or partnered or whatever in the past, they have ALL changed for the worse, cant see why JWB would be any different  Mars is a huge company that has huge profits, they can make their profits even higher by replacing good expensive quality ingredients with poor cheaper ones."

If they stick to the same ingredients I would stick to the food as it suits all of mine.

Just want to do my research incase it does change

Maybe they will change the ingredients, maybe they won't.  We will just have to wait and see or you could write to them explaining your concerns.  IMO it would be poor business sense to change the food as it covers a particular corner of the market, i.e.  better ingredients for those who prefer to feed their dogs better food and can afford to do so.  This is why you have puppy, junior, adult, maintenance etc. in all brands as they are trying to cover all bases.  Still we won't know for sure what their motives are yet.

Personally I don't think JWB is cheap and I changed to them for specific reasons regarding my dog.  If the ingredients changed I would expect my dog to change and it would not then be in my interests or my dog's interest to continue spending reasonable money for poorer quality.  I'm not concerned though, my glass is always half full ;)

Am I wrong, but over the last year or so since JWB was taken over the vitamin levels have halfed, I'm pretty certain Burns vitamin levels have plumetted recently also., maybe they are about to be sold.??

I was told this last week by a pet shop owner, he said that it was going to be aimed at the supermarket end so the recipe would change to reflect this. But that was his opinion although i had just asked him if he stocked AG (they don't) and then asked about nutro and JWB.

The JWB rep says there are no changes to the actual food as far as he is aware, but it is going to be sold in Tesco!!

By all accounts, it seems there have been quite a few changes in managment recently, and there are more ahead...

I told him, as long as my older boy, Indy, is ok, then I will continue to feed JWB.  If Indy starts to get ill again, then I will have a re think.
