thought some of you may like to read this its from Scrappys MUM :)
Hello everyone,
Just to add to the other posts on this theme and YES - SCRAPPY HAS WON THE HILLS CANINE SLIMMER OF THE YEAR 2005 AWARD. We are so proud of him.
Do you want the details ? - yes - of course you do.
We were taken by taxi from home (one hour and fifteen minutes) to Manchester Piccadilly and then travelled by first class train to London Euston. We were then taken to a very exclusive five star hotel in Chelsea, where we were based. When we arrived Hills had sent a big parcel containing food, bowls, a lead and a toy for Scrappy, and he was generally treated like royalty.
He was SO well behaved He slept on his quilt on the train, managed lifts, busy train stations and just took everything in his stride. (Glenys and Kathryn you would have been so proud of him)
David and I have never travelled first class and have never stayed in such luxurious surroundings in our lives, so it was a huge experience for us - never mind our beloved Scrappy.
London is not the first place you would think of to take a Labrador but we when took him a walk in Battersea park and people were stopping us to have a chat. Needless to say when we were telling Scrappy's story we mentioned ' Labrador Rescue'
Because he was not used to the Hotel and we didn't want to risk upsetting him to go to the Restaurant we asked for 'room service'.
Now - I don't know about the rest of you but we have never been in the position to order room service before. I have to tell you we were not just in a room but a suite of rooms, large bedroom, 2 bathrooms. sitting room and walk-in wardrobe.
David and I innocently thought they would bring the food and they would use the coffee table but they brought up this fancy heated trolly that opened into a dining table set with silver service, damask napkins and fresh flowers. Scrappy was very impressed.
On Sunday we were taken to Westminster where he met the people from Hill's Nutrition and press. We all had to go into nearby St James's park where they took hundreds of photos.
He then had his award ( a lovely glass trophy ) and some doggy goodies, the Veterinary practice got a trophy and a cheque and everyone made such a fuss of him. He was extremely calm and well behaved throughout the whole thing.
If any dog could represent the best qualities of Labradors it is Scrappy. He has been absolutely fabulous. People were stopping to talk to us on the train and commenting on his calm behaviour so we were choked with emotion about how well he coped with the change in routine. The only time he got slightly upset was when David went to the tea bar to get us a cuppa then he stood on 'high alert' until David came back.
We have done our best to highlight the work done by Labrador Rescue and we intend to share our prize - Kathryn and Glenys we need to talk about this.
He is in the 'SUN' newspaper and will be in the Daily Mail. We have had urgent contacts from local TV stations and loads of freelance reporters. But we have decided not to take this any further as all Scrappy wants is his family and not a media circus.
The next stage is the European Slimmer of the Year - so we will see how he goes on but of course we are not really bothered because he is our own lovely 'golden toes'and will remain so regardless of any competitions.
At every opportunity we will continue to raise the profile of Labrador Rescue.
With much love and thankyou for your kind comments
Scrappy and his doting family - Pat, David, Elizabeth, and Alex.

some may think its OTT to get so excited about this but I have been in rescue 13 years I have seen so much negative things in rescue and really Scrappy was in danger when we took him in as he was so overweight almost as bad as being starved.
The sheer commitment his adoptive family gave to him was huge, its very hard to refuse pleading eyes when there is food about.
So this has given me and extra buzz and of course we need some excitement :)
