I've just stumbled across an alternative universe !! - on another forum ( horse one) - a poster stated her intention of getting a bitch of a medium to large breed that was easily sellable so that she could breed pups to offset the  cost of keeping her horses - could I reccomend a suitable breed ? - well I certainly reccommended something but not what she wanted to hear :(. the worrying thing is that so many people on that forum saw nothing wrong in her intentions - ( I was just accused of being a 'dog snob' for mentioning the need to health test etc) - it's like whistling in the wind

Not surprised :( A couple of years ago, a friend moved to a fairly remote spot in Scotland. She couldn't pursue her previous career and was trying to decide what to do, jobwise. A new acquaintance in the village suggested that she did what she was doing - breeding puppies :( :( My friend had never even had a dog before, let alone breed :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

We are really up against it when we try our best to promote responsible breeding aren't we?

Until the time comes when the rest of the population sees sense, we will have to continue to take all the bad press and name calling. Who would be a breeder? We can't win, if we promote health testing and breed standards, we are said to be snobs, and we have to accept all the slurs thrown at us when we discourage back yard breeding.

People are in such a rush these days, we are living in an 'instant' society, people want to breed a litter just because they can, not because they want to make a good job of it.

Suggest in return that it's as sensible an idea as buying some ponies at the sales and sell them for pet food.

the horse world certainley has its similarites & also its differences:rolleyes: being a ex horsey i know!!!!!!
people in horses are used to crossing different types of horses(ie welsh cob x TB / anglo arabs etc) & producing a foal if the mare can not be ridden anymore.
also horses are sold on etc etc.when outgrown/wanting something else /etc etc.

I have noticed the same on many other sites too.  I think that the difference is that this site has an awful lot of breeders and showers and judges, vets assistants,  etc. etc. whereas other sites have none of these and are 80% joe public, so they have no experience or concept of what is right or wrong.  The normal dog owner who comes on this site is lucky to be advised and taught by all the good experienced people on here (we all know who they are) So yes, you would be called a 'dog snob' by another site as it is from a different world. Let's face it, if all potential dog owners/breeders came on this site first, they would not breed or buy out of the need to satisfy themsleves after having a proffessional explain the in's and outs to them.

yvonne, it is, sadly something that is a very common conception amongst horse folk Although i am a "horse folk"  i am ashamed to report that irresponsible dog ownership & especially dog breeding is rife more than anywhere else, amongst the horse fraternity. Sorry but thats the way it is & neither you or I with our responsible attitudes to both of above are ever likely to change it. it is perfectly the norm in horse world to mix & match breeds of dogs & have lots of pups around of varying x-breeds & no one ever thinks of it as wrong It isa also quite the norm to tink of letting every fermale dog you own regardless of breeding etc. to have a litter or two to help pay for the horse feed. i have given up lecturing to my other horsey friends, its a complete waste of time

Not just horsey people.  Quite a lot of farmers around here breed, mostly JRT's, like they are going out of fashion.  It is a way of boosting income.
