Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Obedience - Whats the point?
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 08.01.06 13:31 UTC
As the other thread was locked

Just wanted to make the point PUBLICLY that I wasn't having a go at Michelle D - my posting fell in the wrong place!

I was having a go at the so-called obedience people who don't obey TOS!!!

I did think and post that that was probably what you  were doing.

It is a shame the thread was locked as I find the them and us attitude sad and strange, and feel that anything that allows understanding of the the various disciplines betwen the people involved can only be a good thing

I supose I get an insight being friends with people that have always done Obedience.

I think it is a crying shame that this thead was locked when some of the other, very offensive ones haven't been yet

I would imagine it was nearest the top.

i have no interest in showing myself. yet do get dog world & our dogs to read the breed notes & reports ,because im interested in DOGS this is also why i stay on CD when sometimes it is  biased toward the "breed showing " side. i know alot of people in obedience who are as experinced in breeding competition dogs as the some of you are at breeding show dogs.

there is a smattering of ob people on here,(& other sports too) but mainley they are also involved in breed (ie MMaiden) dont think she will mind me using her as a example!!!!!

> Now is it not surprising that the so-called "obedience" people are those who on this board are not prepared to obey Terms of Service???? <

I'm one of those "so called"obedience people & my dogs have never been submissive & often are not willing to obey either

So in what way am I not adhering to the TOS ?

I find you remark quite offensive & against the TOS

OMG!   No no no Moonmaiden - I was talking Trolls !!!!!! Certainly not you.

I'm one of those 'obedience people' too and I have never done any wind ups in my life!

As Michelle said, its dogs I love and that is the reason I'm here. I do the odd breed show but my real love is agility and obedience. When we do breed, the dogs put up with it, but they love the motivational training in obedience and go completely mad for agility. And to the person who said, agility/obedience ppl are your dogs working or is it play? Yes it is play, that's the whole point! It's a game which the dogs love, which is more than can be said for breed shows. However, I can see the point in them too, as others have said, without them breeds would have turned unrecognisable by now. I do also think they have their bad points though, such as developing breeds and pushing them away from a natural state such as British Bulldogs and Dachshunds, etc who have medical problems caused directly through being bred to extreme.
- By michelled [gb] Date 08.01.06 14:17 UTC
yes my dogs see it as play too!
my oldest bitch i dont work now because she didnt enjoy her training, so she is just a pet now.

my middle bitch had a really nasty accident just after she won her 1st novice & unfortunatly she cant physically cope with it now. she "lived" to work, so i still train her but wont compete.

my boy is "bred" to do obedience, he is all obedience lines, he was C only before his 3rd birthday & is as happy a dog as you could find, not very obedient though...but good at obedience!!!!;)

I'm making this statement quite deliberately to clear any misunderstandings that may occur.

I posted the dictionary definition of obedience on a thread which was being taken over by the BCCrazy/bordercollielover/colliesrus/trollsrus etc.

They were all banging on about obedience - but obviously from the language that they were using, they do not apply "obedience" to themselves insofar as they were beaking terms of service by using inappropriate language, etc etc.

I was not referring to any other obedience/agility training people on the board, so please do not take offence where none was intended.

unless of course I missed out any wums - in which case - if the cap fits - wear it!

Who on earth are they? Before my time I wonder, are they the 'trolls' from last night?

Oh and no offence taken Margot. :)

Dont be fooled by people trying to cause upset between you all:cool:

Warm regards Susan

It hasn't upset me Susan.  I have a Border Collie who has two tickets in breed and works A & B in obedience. (She would be working a lot higher if she had an experienced handler).  I didn't reply earlier as I have been to an obedience training weekend.

I love to do both, both the dog and myself enjoy doing both.  In breed she sleeps on her bench, but she wouldn't have done as well as she has if she didn't come alive when in the ring.

Refering to the locked thread, why was the poster so pleased her dogs behaved in such a hyper manner in the car when going to a show, I know what I would rather have.  I would also guess she hasn't excelled in agility, sad really when someone has such a blinkered view.

BTW I have also done Agility and flyball with a previous BC, so I think as such I can put a more balanced view that the OP did.

I must say i was a little annoyed by a comment stating "you see more check chains in the show ring than in obedience"

They are show chains and not to be used for anything else but shows and certainly hahahaha a flimsy little show chain that i use is of no training benefit a simple pull in the wrong direction would snap it.
I use them as they are thin little chains that don't detract any attention from the dog!

Check chains?? No. Show chains?? Yes. No need for check chains in the ring, thats why you take your dog to ringcraft  ;) Half check collar and lead out of the ring, gold chain in the ring. It looks nice ;) :)
