- By STARRYEYES Date 07.01.06 16:48 UTC
at least if he had got in ...no tax on booze!!!!!
- By LJS Date 07.01.06 21:58 UTC
So he has resigned and hope he comes out of this with some hope :)
- By Lea Date 07.01.06 22:01 UTC
Unfortunatly now he has had to resign he has probably hit the bottle again :(
Considering most if not all of his MP's etc knew for years he had a drink problem, he has been stabbed in the back BIG TIME, and I do feel sorry for him.

On the news last night, a journalist said that, basically, some of his colleagues were just fed up with having to cover up for him when he wasn't up to attending meetings etc - one was as recently as 7 weeks ago  You can't really blame them, can you ?

Grumpy girl  I will let you get away with it cause of the ickle Archie boy ;)

Well Charles Kennedy must be doing something right because look at the seats the Lib Dems gained at the last election and this was when he probably wasn't firing on all cylinders - if he was they may have made an even bigger impression.

Personally, although I'll have never voted LD, Charles Kennedy has always struck me as being a genuinely ok sort of guy and pretty approachable.    I think it would be the undoing of the LD to get rid of him, the rest of them are a wishy washy grey bunch - name another LD that looks like they could run the party, infact just name another Lib Dem! ;)

From what I heard on the radio during Friday, Churchill was sauced most of the time during his stint as PM and George Bush is a recovering alcoholic too.   All I can say is no-one is perfect, we all have our failings - admitting them is probably the hardest thing to do.

Lembit Opik (Spelling??)

No Lembit Opik is the next puzzle to feature in the Daily Mail after Sudoku, or whatever it's called? ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Good one :D :p

I feel for Charles Kennedy .......he has been put in a position whereby he has HAD to admit he has a problem ....

I for one am not in a position to judge him as being either brave or stupid ...I have my own demons and the moral high ground is an awfully chilly place to stand :)
- By Daisy [gb] Date 07.01.06 10:36 UTC
It depends what you mean by 'judge' :) Nobody here is criticising him for his alcoholism - we all realise that it is a fairly easy path to get onto, particularly if you have a stressful job and (possibly) a family tendency. However, if it is affecting his ability to lead his party and it MUST be, otherwise, why are so many of his own colleagues against him, then he should stand down. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4586948.stm. It seems that he has had a 'problem' for a while. Who is to say that his colleagues haven't been 'carrying' him for several years - only putting up with him because the country in general like him. The public don't have to work with him and don't see, maybe, what goes on in private. Churchill was obviously a different kettle of fish as he was the only person at the time - drunk or not :D - who could carry the country with him in desperate times :)

I didn't say anyone here HAD judged him ;) I simply said that *I* wasn't going to :)

>t seems that he has had a 'problem' for a while. Who is to say that his colleagues haven't been 'carrying' him for several years - only putting up with him because the country in general like him.

I agree with this.  He seems to be a very nice man and there is no reason I can see to dispute that.  When he is interviewed he comes over as genuine, nothing false, snidey or smarmy, quite an achievement for a politician and an excellent "frontman" or "face" for any political party.  Unfortunately for him frontmen in politics have to be squeaky clean because when the opposition and more importantly, the media find a flaw they will chip and chip and chip away at it until it is a gaping chasm.  IMO for his own health and for the sake of his family he should step aside as the pressure is only going to keep building.

BAH!! My post fell in the wrong place.  In case you hadn't heard Charles Kennedy has just resigned.
- By STARRYEYES Date 07.01.06 16:51 UTC
not interested in politics hic!  too boring for me!
- By arched [gb] Date 09.01.06 10:33 UTC
I know I'm a bit late with this  !.
I did hear this on GMTV on Friday though and it made me laugh. Somebody phoned in and said that Charles Kennedy should be allowed to stay as leader because of what Tony Blair has done to the country.....without drinking !!!.

.... as far as we know ....! ;) :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 09.01.06 18:16 UTC
Politics is in danger of straying totally into the realms of fantasy.

If Menzies (pronounced Mingiss, known as Ming for short) Campbell becomes leader of the Lib Dems, when Gordon Brown takes over Labour we'll have Ming the Merciless and Flash Gordon in government! What hope for David Cameron? :D :D :D

David and Goliath:rolleyes:
