Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / My 7 month old British Bulldog is wetting the bed.
- By Sarah Pior [gb] Date 06.01.06 11:49 UTC
Hello, Please help,

I have 2 British Bulldogs both 7 months old, a boy and a girl.  I have had them both from 8 weeks old and they are still wetting the bed.  The problem is I dont no which one it is.  I have been to the vet to test for infections and they are all clear.

I have spoke to the breeder who has suggested it maybe the boy and its just his hormones changing.   They both share a big plastic bed with a washable cusion, and every morning I come down stairs they are both lying in there and it is all wet with pee. As you can imagin this makes them smell.  I cant understand why dogs would want to lie in their own mess.

They both go out at least four times before they go to bed which is around 10.30pm so its not as if they dont need to go.  I even dont leave any water down at night to see if that makes a differane but it dosen't. Please can you help any suggestions would be great.

They have not been spayed or castrated.  Would this help if they were??

Thanks Sarah:confused:

First of all, separate them at night so you know which one it is. They're going to need totally separating, day and night, soon anyway because the bitch will be coming into season so she'll need to be completely apart from the dog for three to four weeks - ideally in different houses, but certainly not in the same room. At all.

I agree, first you need to identify which one it is, so separate them at night.

Then you should take a trip to the vet's to rule out any physical reasons why it might be happening.  (There are a few physical probs which could cause it.)

Have they wet the bed always from when they are 8 wks old?  Or have they been dry and then this started happening?

It seems to be a Bulldog thing I think, but saying that hopefully they will grow out of it. PM me and I will give you details of a site where you will be able to get some more breed specific advice :-)

Yep.  When we had our Bulldog she used to do this every day - it didn't matter what time of the morning I got up I would come down to a freshly done wee (sometimes a poo too )  It was as if she heard me coming downstairs and thought that it was something she ought to do for me   She was 5 when we got her from Bulldog Rescue and we lost her a few years ago aged 8 - we ended up getting a crate for her in our bedroom and she slept in there at night and this actually stopped her from weeing for quite a long time.  She  only started doing it again in the last 5 - 6 months of her life, she just couldn't be bothered to get up and go anymore preferring to wee where she laid - this didn't help her wet eczema as you can imagine :(

Funnily enough my friend asked me the other day if this kind of thing was common with bully's as she has one (aged 2) who leaves a present for her every morning (a girl bully) so I'm beginning to think that yes it is a common problem   Give tigerlilly a PM and she'll send you to the bully site - very helpful people :)

Good luck, love and snuffles to the bullys Tara x

hi,

i do also have a bully that does this, he is now nearly two, and is still doing it.  i have come to the conclusion, that he goes into a really deep sleep and doesn't realise he is doing it,  but that could be me just making excuses for him!!

May i just drop in on this topic, my 10 yr old rhodesian ridgeback male 'drips' most of the night and sometimes wee's the bed, sleeping next to me.  I never scold him just change the bedding and use that dog deodoriser spray frequently!.

He is a wonderful ridgeback and in his case only had this problem after a operation for stomache cancer then one year later breat cancer, as long as he remains otherwise healthy he can stay doing his dripping, the main thing being his appreciation and affection towards me.    michael cutler

I agree with the others that you have to separate them. Just to add that when you find out which one is doing it, I'd try putting a piece of vetbed over the washable cusion in the bed. Vetbed will wick the pee away from the fur part your dog lies on and should help with the smell problem. You'll have to wash the vetbed every day of course.

For that reason its a good idea to have two so one can be put down while the other is being washed :)  Same with normal bedding - its always an idea to have 'spare' even if its just a towel or something

Buy it some nappies or stick a cork up its butt hole.
