Topic Dog Boards / General / Insurance renewal

Just got my renewal documents today and the premium has risen to £19.95 a month its with Pet Plan for 1 bitch age three and a half, never had to claim, this includes a dscount for pensioners!! I know the increase is only £2.00 a month, but, I feel this money would be better off in my pocket than Pet Plans.  Anyone know of other insurance companies that do a similar standard of insurance only a bit cheaper as every penny counts now for me.

i have heard that marks and spencers does very good and cheap insurence tho i have never used it myself.
another trick is that if you have another house or someone you know lives somewhere where the premiums are cheeper then you can put your address down there and then get them to send the post on. (i heard this from someone who works at petplan - i don't do it myself cos we got it before i heard about it) also i don't know how good i would feel if i did it.

hope you have more luck finding a cheeper insurence

Thanks Anna, but I live in one of the "cheapest areas" so that won't work, thanks for the tip anyway.

One of our dogs was insured with Pet Plan and in the end the premiums rose way beyond the cost of his annual treatment at the vet - even allowing for the conditions which often accompany extreme old age since he was nearly 18 when he died!

Nips is insured with M & S who have been highly recommended by various people. Haven't had to claim yet (touching wood frantically here) but impressed with the cost and cover offered.

Hi,

I gave up on Dog Insurance recently! As I have never claimed and my Insurance with More Than went up from £14.99 to £17.99 per month for a 4 1/2 year old dog, I cancelled it. When I called and asked why it had gone up so much the chap said it was the rise in Vet bills, I was like what 20% your having a laugh.

So my partner and I now put away £40 per month in a seperate dog account so that will added up and can be used when needed, also we are getting another dog at the end of Feb and I didn't want to waste £35 pounds a month on something I have never used and get nothing out of. I did look at other Insurance companies but as we live in London it's still quite expensive. It's a bit of a scam really!

P.S Check out Argos I looked at them on the Money saving expert website and was quite good but didn't look at the fine details, they were definately cheaper but I don't know anybody who has used them.

I have my puppy insured with M+S and they paid out really quickly on a claim. My vet said that it was one of the best policies as it also covers complimentary medicine that others do not. There is no time limit on claims so it can be on going for years (this was a very important factor to me have a dog prone to HD) 12 months limit is plain silly in my opinion.

M+S also not not charge an access, although this costs me an extra £1 a month, its worth it.

Check them out.

Errr - that's not a trick - that's fraud :( And how are you going to explain that you use a vet many miles away from your home ??? You'd also have to give the wrong address to your vet :(

Just been online to check out other insurance companies, if any of you are insured with Tesco, do you know that if you breed your insurance is not valid???? please check your policies just in case ive read it wrongly, also its not valid if your dog is a "working gun dog". thought I would point out these to you. As I have bred my bitch I wont be able to take out Tesco insurance, please correct me anyone if ive got this wrong. I also checked out Asda insurance and they only insure any condition you claim for, for a year. which is no good if you have an ongoing condition.

I haven't read the Tesco policy but most policies will not cover vet fees incurred by breeding. I don't think it means that you can't breed, only that you cannot claim for any associated costs.

I'm changing all mine over to M&S, cos it will cost me less than for 2 dogs to insure all 4!!! They will also cover my 8 year old Newfie, with a smallish excess!! which I'm also made up about!!
- By copper_girl [gb] Date 05.01.06 21:23 UTC
Try M&S, they are reasonable, have a no excess option for not a lot extra money per month and when I claimed they paid out in good time and not even ONE phone call to me to double check my claim.  I pay about £14 per month for Copper, that's for a pedigree dog on their highest cover.  It's a whole of life policy as well up until age 9 or 10.  You'll find a lot of companies now are basing their excesses on a percentage of the bill and not a fixed £35 like it used to be.  M&S don't do this until the dog gets older.  Insurance companies are only in it to make money I'm afraid.  They never lose.

Im not saying M & S are not good, but Tesco was cheaper and also Asda, not checked out other insurance co's yet, going to phone pet plan though and ask why my premium is so high seeing ive never claimed off them. I can insure two of my dogs  with tesco for a couple of pounds more than im paying pet plan for one dog.

I used to be with Petplan until the premiums went up by far too much.

Now with M&S no access policy.

I haven't looked at the Tesco, Asda policy, but check you are insured for life on an illness or injury, not just for 12 months which is what most of the cheaper ones offer.

I use Direct Line. It works out at £12 a dog and thats for the advanced one (covers things for life, not 12 months) Now I do have two dogs and two cats covered, so I can't remember what if any discounts I got. Kind of paid itself as one of the cats got run over and the bill ended up being £1500 so I can't moan

Thanks everyone for all your help, will  make up my mind this w/e whether to stay with pet plan or go elsewhere.
- By ClaireyS Date 06.01.06 18:40 UTC
I am with direct line and they have just put my excess up to £65 and the only claim I had then was when my cat was killed on the road - a whole £35 :(  I phoned M&S today and the policy is the same as direct line but with no excess - and its cheaper !!!  I will be moving to them ;)
