We have a 5 year old OES bitch and were thinking about getting another dog now shes grown up, i would like a british bulldog having met a work colleagues dog. My question, is their any behavioural problems with either breed which will cause conflict? I know its a bit stupid really as it depends on the dogs but just want to make sure.

I've had a Bulldog, she was absolutely gorgeous and got on really well when we brought in a puppy (springer cross).

My suggestion, if you are at all concerned, would be to ask your work collegue if they would bring their bully round to your house to see how you sheepdog gets on - this way, by the bully coming to you, your dog will be on her territory and you will be able to see how she reacts as this is what your main concern should be, how your sheepdog gets on with another dog in her home.

HTH, good luck.

weve had my sisters springer over and she seemed to get on ok, apart from when she strayed towards her feeding bowl, and she was playing wither in the garden, since then my sister brought her cocker pup about a week ago and there was no trouble.
Ive been told im better getting a dog rather than a bitch, is this likely to reduce conflict?

Hi Curzon

I currently have two boys together no problem - the bulldog was a girl and the pup we introduced was a boy again no problems - I've also had two springer girls (mum and daughter) and a boy springer (the son) together and apart from the mum telling the pups off (even when they were 4 !) there was no problem.

Bulldogs in general are pretty laid back but I think it may do you good to go on the bulldog forum (www.bulldogsuk.com) and ask on there for their views as they'll be able to give you more advice :)

Hi! I know the OP was asking about behavioural aspects.  What about the differencies in size and speed? I'm sure this has been taken into consideration already, thought I'd mention it, though. Of course a new dog will need a lot of time spent with it on it's own, away from the older dog. But eventually it will be nice to be able to take them for walks together. Maybe owners of bulldogs and OES could give their wiews on the matter? Both are very nice breeds, maybe a bit different in temperament?
Good luck with the new addition to the family!
All the best,
Karen

funnily enough the difference in size is not something I would worry about tbh - the bully is between 50-70lbs, squat and built like a brick sh*thouse - I've seen my own bully have a go at a full gorwn rottie that she decided was getting to close to my OH, no harm done but it was a shock for the rottie to see a short fat 'bird' having a go at him :D

If it was a whippet, yorkie, chihauhau etc then I would be concerned about the difference in size but a bully and a sheepdog (both good with children, get on ok with other household pets, good watchdogs) I think would be fine together.  As for speed - believe it or not a bully can run very fast indeed - they just don't like to that often :D :D :D  One of the funniest things i've seen is my bully running full pelt around my garden and 'leap' gracefully over a 1 and a half foot fence :)

I've just seen one of my friends this morning who has a boxer and a bully (bully is now 2) and they both get on well, run around together, rough and tumble, sleep in the same bed - the only thing they do apart is walking as the bully doesn't 'do' exercise as vigorously as the boxer - bless them :)

Have a chat with the guys and girls on the bulldog forum Curzon I'm sure they'll offer you loads of valuable advice.

Hi,

"If it was a whippet, yorkie, chihauhau etc then I would be concerned about the difference in size "

I go doggie walking with a couple who have 2 year old Great Dane and a year old Yorkie - I wince every time I see Dane running towards the Yorkie, but they play together! it's quite incredible to watch. Does look a very odd match but it works for them :-)  I personally couldn't cope with it - think I'd have a nervous break down :-D.

I have no experience of Bullys but wouldn't have thought the difference in size would be something to be too concerned about :-)

Well I have two bulldogs and I wouldn't change them for the  world they are the nicest temperaments ever and so laid back it's unbelievable. They go up the park and play with lots of diferent breeds, labs, springers, great danes, vizlas, terriers etc and they get on well with all of them. Go for it :-) but I would need a photo of your new bully baby just to see how cute it is ;-)

Good luck and look on the bulldog site it would be good for you.

Hi Tigerlily - was you at the companion show at Rookley in November ?  I just remember seeing a gorgeous brindle bully there that we all fell in love with   My springer cross kept whining everytime we saw it as he loves them, I think he remembers Bella as she was like a mum to him :)
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 05.01.06 13:54 UTC

On their way :-)

I went once to the ringcraft at East Cowes, found it slightly.................odd, lol. What do you think of it? How old is your boxers?
- By Boxer Mum Date 05.01.06 18:24 UTC
Ringcraft is a tad odd - it seemed ok the first few times we went but just recently it seems to be them down that end and the rest of us up the other end with no-one knowing what is really going on or even why ! LOL   Dylan is 8 months now - rebellious teenage phase   whereas Rufus (good old dependable springer cross) will be 4 in February.   We hope to get another boxer around August time (we should have our own place by then !) fingers crossed.
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 05.01.06 18:40 UTC
That is right about the class, lol

Dylan and Rufus sound lovely :-) maybe we could meet one day, in Newport maybe? I don't know, just an idea there are not that many of us down here on the Island

Dozer, the red is 11 months and Bubbles the white is 9 months, so I know what you are going through with the teenage phase :-)
- By Boxer Mum Date 05.01.06 18:51 UTC
They are gorgeous - I could just snuggle up to Bubbles right now, she is sooo pretty and Dozer, well, very handsome looking young man :)

Would be nice to meet up one day :)  I only know of another two CD'ers from the Island Parrot1974 and hebeboots so no, not many of us at all :(   Anymore out there ? Calling all Wighties your time is up ! LOL :D
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 05.01.06 19:05 UTC
Lol, don't scare them off :-D well there may be 4 of us meeting up then?

Bubbles is a real darling, very sweet and gentle and also completely deaf, she was born deaf. Dozer is my boy, he is a real mummy's boy and loves his cuddles, they have such nice temperments and are great with people, kids and dogs. Love them to bits. My friend has a boxer and he is a gentle giant, very nice dog. Would love to meet yours.
