Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / My dog eats cat poo!

My dog keeps taking cat's poo from the litter tray - also when out walking she makes for horse poo. Any ways of stopping this rather disgusting habit?

Is that all? :D My dog eats those and rabbit poo and occasionally she still eats dogs poo - yummy :D

From what I can gather some dogs do and some dogs don't and although disgusting to us it obviously isn't to them.  I don't have cats but if I did I would make sure that the dog couldn't get to the litter tray.  Cats food has more protein than commercial dog foods so this might be the attraction to the poo.  My dog improved no end when I changed her diet and she doesn't eat the dog poo very often if at all.  I saw her eating something off the park today but it might have been rabbits or deer.

my dog would and have eaten the cat poo from the tray .
I keep the tray on the landing and a child gate on the stairs.
this also gives the cats a bit of space if they want peace and quiet and prevents the dogs eating the poo.
Dont worry about it only advice other than this is to keep it clean as soon as they use it empty
the tray.

good luck

Thanks to both of you. Glad it's not an unusual habit!

To add to what others have said, cat litter can be extremely dangerous for dogs to eat (and they will invariably swollow some of the litter as it clings to the poo), so it is essential that your dog can't get to the litter trays. We have all ours where the dogs can't reach them, such as behind baby gates or dog gates.

We have our cat litter boxes in closets with cat flaps on the doors so the dogs have absolutely no way of getting in. Also keep all cat toys away from dogs unsupervised.

Normal, normal, normal LOL

We keep ours behind a dog proof gate...you can also get the litter trays that are a little house shape?? Maybe that would help?

Our new little girl eats cat poo too   Either our cat or next doors cat has a 'spot' in our garden where they do their business (its in a low planter ) and she's was in their getting a "tasty snack" every time we took her into the garden *yuk*  We just say a firm "No!" whenever we see our her heading over to the planter in question and it keeps her away most of the time :)

We're lucky in the fact that our cat doesn't use a litter tray at all.  But try putting it up a height so that your dog doesn't injest any of the litter as it could cause harm.

As has already been said though its "normal" behaviour for a dog.  One of our previous dogs used to have his nose surgically attached to my old rabbits bum every time he went in to see him in order to 'clean' it - he thoroughly enjoyed it too! *double yuk*  Just try not to think about it ;)
