Shes jus coming up for five November 2006. I have been told that breeding a pom after 5 yrs old is dangerous. shes in her season at the moment and im really thinking about letting her have puppies. I thought because you have had some experience in puppies you may be able to give me some advice. as i said she means everything to me . I dont want to risk her. We have a stud dog lined up for this sunday (just to see him and to meet his owner ). Please could you write back as i really need some help quick. She is a nice size . alot bigger than other pomeranians. We have been told that she would have know trouble but im not so sure . Her mum had no trouble having her.????????

first things first haley i think you are a little young, breeding any type of dog is alot of hard work and money you would still be attending school how will you cope with a heavily pregnant dog who cant sleep and disturbs you or waiting up all night sometimes more than 1 night waiting for pups and then dealing with pups as they get older and then finding good homes.

Have you had all testing done in some dogs not all but these things need to be check eyes/elbows/hips.and then there are the specific testings for your dog. all of which run into the thousands of dollars if done properly.

Also if something is wrong with a pup and no one wants it will you keep it and what if there is a problem with the whole litter these are very possible.

do you know your girls pedigree's and the males pedigree's. What quality pup has the male produced before show/breed or pet is he hip/eye elbow tested and what ever else is necessary for your breed

and most importantly why do you want to breed ?

and also just because her mum had no trouble does not mean yours wont

just so you dont misunderstand this im not attacking you or anything i am just pointing out facts i started breeding when i was 21 and even then no matter how much i had read and researched the lack of sleep along with the stress that comes along with breeding was hard to cope with at 21 at 14 you are just to young why dont you spend the next 6-7 years learning all there is to know about your breed possibly get another girl show her if you like that then consider breeding. Showing your girl gives you great contacts and also lets you know if your girl would be a quality breeder it also instills alot of discipline in the bitch/dog

The reason i want to breed isnt for money . I just want her to have a chance to have pups. My mum will be involved the whole time . I love my little dog elly to bits and would never let anything happen to her. we are inseprible. sorry for putting my age im new to this website. I have had puppies before and i know how hard they are but i am a animal lover and will be there for them 24/7 . I also dont go to school anymore so i litrally will always be around. Her mum and grandmothers before her have never had trouble but i will still be VERY cautious as i said she is everything to me .She would be a brilliant mum . I have done alot of research and my mum and dad are not bothered about how much money we spend at the vets . She to preciouse. i am going to see the vets soon and i have booked a day to see a professional breeder with her stud dog to see what she thinks. I wouldnt risk her atall. the vet would be waiting always . This season is the last one i am thinking about letting her have a litter beacause after five i have been informed is more risky for pomeranians.I love animals . i know how difficult babies can be .my mum used to breed chiuauas.
Thank you for writing
please could you help me further . as i said i want to know all of the risks, i will never put her in danger.

thanks
haley

p.s : if you would like i can send you a picture of Elly.Dont worry if i Know she would struggle i wouldnt do it .

Haley, is your bitch Kennel Club registered, with no breeding endorsements on her registration? Has she had (and passed) all the breed-relevant tests for hereditary conditions? And has she been independently assessed as suitable for breeding?

If I was you I wouldn't do it!  Pomeranian's are one of the most heartbreaking breeds going.  Before now I have lost a Pomeranian who was 9 weeks pregnant, we didn't get her to the vets in time to have live puppies.  She was fine 1 minute and dropped down dead the next with no outward signs of anything being wrong.

Many Pomeranian's have C-sections.

We have had two litters recently and lost most of the pups.

They are not a breed for the fainthearted and in my opinion need knowledgable people to be there when having a litter.  Five is quite old for a first litter also.

You may be lucky and have no problems.

Yes she is registered . We got her from a lady called mrs gloria morgan . she goes to crufts i dont know wether you have seen her. i just want to breed her as a pet . why is everything so complacated??????? id rather not do it! She would love pups and i would to but im seriously thinking not now. :'( im not risking her . Its a shame .

Hayley.  Hello:cool:

Why dont you contact the Breeder that you got your dog from and follow her advise.  I know you said you were not at school, so i presume your are Home Schooled ( gosh that spelling looks wrong!).  It is still a full time complicated business having a litter of pups, never mind all the pregnancy stuff!  The lady you got your dog from, will understand all the pitfalls and benefits of you breeding from your dog, and whether or not it is a good idea for you.

Best wishes

Tan

okay well first i think your mum should be there every step of the way and you dont have alot of time to prepare i would suggest not breeding this particular girl and maybe getting another but if your heart is set on breeding this girl then i will go thru some regular things with breeding.

most breeding studs/nitches need to be hip scoredhip probs dont appear in every breed but can so it is good to have them scored also elbows and knees particularly in the pomeranian i know they do have knee probs.

also if the pom does need it heart/eye tests you will need to ask your vet

the optimum breeding age in most dogs (so a successful mating with a successful whelp) is between the age of 2-5 and some breed 3-6 (my breed is 3-6)

also all the health tests you need for the bitch you will need for the stud to so the stud dog owner should have these if they dont and arnt willing to do it DO NOT breed with their stud you dont know what probs the stud could pass on

you girl should be temprement tested some girls just dont have the temprement to look after pups and to have pups with no temprement issues

there is alot i prob havent put in but i need specific questions number them and ill answer them

As i said she is 4 years old , shes very mothering ,Her  pedigree is very good , she has alot of show winners in her family ,shes a big girl and VERY healthy. i will defenatly check all of the things you wrote about . I have been reasearching for a  long time now .my main problems are:
                     what can go wrong?
What do i do if things do go wrong?
Whats the worst that can happen?

Thanks for allll of your help

What can go wrong

Well if it can go wrong it may go wrong

What do i do if things do go wrong?

You stay calm and try to do your best, involving a vet (which will cost you) and staying awake around teh clock to make sure puppies are OK, you may have to hand feed the puppies every two hours because the mother can't/won't.

Whats the worst that can happen?

Loosing Elly and the puppies and being left with a broken heart and a huge vet fee! :(

can you send me a pic of your dog fonzi_lady@hotmail.com
my sister has one 2.
- By slee [au] Date 05.01.06 13:24 UTC
i found these health probs on your dog alot you wont be able to test for but here they are

Slipped Stifle, eye infections, collapsed windpipe, heart disease, skin conditions, tooth and gum disorders

the slipped stifle, heart disease you will be able to test for

and so you know a slipped stifle is a knee prob so you will need to have her knees scored it says nuthing about the hips but it can still happen so i score wouldnt be an all bad thing some breeds are prone to it and some arnt but that doesnt mean they cant get hip dysplasia
- By ice_queen Date 05.01.06 13:20 UTC
Haley.  Breeding any bitch is a risk but your bitch is getting a little old now IMO for a first litter.  I would be very careful, you may loose your elly and/or the puppies which would be such a shame and an awful loss.

Everyone who is an animal lover will not breed.  You may be doing more damage to the breed and dogs by breeding more that could end up in rescue centers.

I'm also concernd that your bitch is in season and you have still not made up your mind on a stud dog.

I personaly think, and this is my opinion, is that you should enjoy elly as she is and maybe think about getting a new puppy (it will also be cheeper)

Thank you .
I dont think im going to know dont worry .Im to scared . :'(
- By ice_queen Date 05.01.06 13:26 UTC
Haley your still young.  If you keep researching like you are, get involved in the breed and talk to people in the breed, join the breed clubs and the Young kennel club to get involved with working and training your dogs etc etc etc you can think about purchasing a pup to breed from in the future!  You have your whole life ahead of you.
- By haley2468 [in] Date 05.01.06 13:28 UTC
I dont want to breed properly it is only because i want to give elly a chance and have a generation of her . She is so special . im not going to risk her .she is my baby. It was just that this is her last chance before she becomes to old .Nothing comes close to her though . i wouldnt lose her for anybody.
- By ice_queen Date 05.01.06 13:34 UTC
I dont want to breed properly

How haley I know you still young and possibly don't understand BUT if you don't breed properly you don't breed at all!

There's only ONE way to breed and that is properly with the right research and putting the two dogs together to improve the breed in temprement, health and conformation. (those are the top 3 aims of most breeders)

I have tried to say the above as nicely as I could however it really did ruffel afew feathers.  Sorry, I don't mean to cause offence but breeding properly or not is NOT a choice

hayley - i have sent you a private message about home schooling - messages at the top bar :-)
- By slee [au] Date 05.01.06 13:29 UTC
i think it is better of waiting a few years and trying with a new girl if you are still passionate about breeding. It took me three years to research everything and pick my first breeding girl and even then and now i still have suprises pop up and i have to ask nobody can know everything. You can be informed on all possibilities and then ask questions about something that isnt written in a book or on the net have a flick through this site and see what some of us have gone through breeding it can be extremely heartbreaking

Haley, if you want another dog like your elly, why don't you get in touch with the breeder she came from, and ask her if she is having any more litters?  Maybe you can have a puppy which is very closely related to elly and will be nearly the same as her, if it is from the same lines.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 06.01.06 19:57 UTC
Just what I was going to say - enjoy Elly as she is, and then when the time comes, contact the breeder and she will probably be able to find you a great-niece or nephew. Always like to see cute pics, yes please! :-)
- By Tenno [gb] Date 07.01.06 14:19 UTC
I would love to see a pic of your pom :-)

I can see how much you care for her by taking everyones advice about not breeding her - well done.

I can also see you would be a very caring breeder & would make a worthwhile contribution to the world of dogs - when you are a little older.

Spend the next couple of years researching & maybe go to a couple of shows to see other poms & their owners - you will get lots of friendly advice!

I have allways wanted to breed / show dogs as my mum & grandmother did but I had my first litter when I was 30!!!
It is not for the feint hearted & we had plenty of problems (section, infection ect) We also had to keep 2 puppies & not just the one we were going to keep, as he broke his leg getting stuck when he was being born & needs expensive vet treatment & meds all his life :-(

Good luck & I hope you continue your love for dogs - why dont you join the ykc?
