I need as much info as possible....done a search and brought up nothing....cant concentrate on the google searches....
One of my puppies had to be pts earlier this afternoon....14weeks old...
I homed one of my pups to a show home at 9weeks old, he was doing very well...a couple of weeks later poo was watery etc...vet x-rayed and operated....after opening up puppy it was found that his bowel had completely twisted and was blue, but was savable. operation was successful and puppy began convalescance...but this morning puppy began straining and had a complete bowel prolapse....rushed to vet, vet began to operate, but decided that this time it was not operable...phoned puppy owners and they had to make the dreadful decision to let pup go..
I got the phone call from them just over and hour ago, and they are devastated, and needless to say so am I....They had done everything right, had kept to the diet sheet...they were excellent owners....they asked the vet if they could have done anything different...ie: was it their fault...vet said that it was just one of those things...but did question where they had bought the pup...a natural question I know!...I have asked them to contact the vet tomorrow to get as much info as possible....but in the meantime I need to know.
I have googled and googled and I cant find anything about this...Is it genetic?... or is it just bloody bad luck...
All other pups are doing great, including the 2 I have kept.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me please
After losing Ellie last week, I dont think I can handle much more :(
So sorry to hear your dreadful news Kay :( Am sorry I don't know much about twisted bowels, but I did think it was just one of those tragic things, which could happento anydog or anyone :( Thinking of you.

Kay
It seems so little to say 'Sorry' again - you have had such a tough time the last few weeks, that I'd love to be of some help to you :(
Good times just have to be around the corner for you - I do hope so :)

Was it twisted or an intersucception? Perhaps your vet could clarify. This is occurs in baby animals of all species and has nothing to do with genetics as far as I understand. I'm very sorry to hear this, it must be very upsetting at that age :(

Isabel, she definately said twisted, but there again, it may have been the vet giving her laymans terms...I have asked her to get as much info from vet as possible...but might be a good idea if I asked her to get her vet to contact me directly....To be honest, with her in tears, and me in tears....I dont think we took in much of what we were saying to each other....

Why don't you leave it till you both get over the grief of it a bit (hug). Any information will still be there when you are ready for it.

So sorry, you are having it rough at the moment

It sounds like an intersusception to me and a search on this will gain you information

Sorry very very sorry to hear you news, my neighbours lost a minature poodle puppy about the same age to similar thing I believe - it was just one of those things no one's fault.
Take care of yourself please
Oh Kay very sorry to hear this, what a dreadful time you`re having :(
Only thing I`ve heard about it is in human intersucception, a vaccine was pulled in the US (I think), its thought thimerosal in the vax is responsable.

Thanks everyone....have done a search on intussuception and it looks as if this is what the problem was...i will try and speak to her vet tomorrow.....
I feel dreadful for the owner, she had waited so long on this mating and was delighted when I let her have 1st pick of the 2 yellow boys... I kept Ollie, she preferred the heavier boned....She is a lovely person and doted on him and she is absolutely devastated.....I just dont know what to say to her....totally lost for words....

Kay my Elsa (the bitch who was PTS last week) had intussuception when she was 11 weeks old -vet said there was nothing we could have done. She never had any more problems in her life with this (or indeed with anything similar) after the surgery as a pup. So it can work out just fine.

So sorry to hear this Kayc
I had this (intussuception) happen to a kitten I kept for showing, she was 18 weeks old. We were lucky in that the vet spotted straight away what was wrong and we were warned that after the op it could prolapse (intussucept) again, but in our case it didn't. She never really grew much after that tho and was always undersized, so unshowable. We were just glad she'd survived tho.
The vet just said it was 'one of those things' when I was worried it could be genetic, and that it was unlikely to happen again in another litter.
Don't know if this helps right now tho
Feeling so much for you both right now

Actually it does help..... I know its sounds weird...but knowing that there was nothing done wrong by either myself or his owner really does help....I put so much into my dogs and my line and I know that he went to a wonderful loving home....Its all just so unfair...
The 1st op to straighten out the bowel was successful...but two weeks later it happened again....he just wasnt meant to be :(

The vet told me it was 'one of those things' when Maddie had it at 10 months old :( They couldn't straighten hers out though so she had part of it removed. At first they thought she had swallowed something that had caused a blockage but nothing was ever found, so we don't know why it happened :(

Forgot to say,
The vet removed 10cm of bowel in the op and
still said it could intussucept again :( We were so lucky it didn't.
Kayc,
I know how you must be feeling ;) when it happened with our kitten I was just wierdly glad it hadn't been one of the ones I'd sold

as well as relieved that she was going to survive.
