After having a horrible freak accident with my dog and his cage over Christmas I justed wanted to warn everyone to double check your cages.
After running my dogs over Christmas I put them in their cages which they automatically go to after each walk to dry off a bit.
I popped out for only half an hour and when I got back my youngster had somehow pushed one of the down struts on the cage which then had broke away from where it had been soldered. He had then somehow pushed his paw underneath and then must of panicked. I came back to find that the metal rod had gone straight through the top of his paw and underneath. Luckily he had stayed calm otherwise things could have been a lot worse. After calling a neighbour we eventually got him free, down to the vets and he's on the mend now.
I just want everyone to know as I check my cages regularly, this was a newish cage (under 12 months) yet it still happened. Even if your cage looks fine. Have a tug on the struts to make sure they are still strongly connected.
Sorry to hear about your boy :(
Gald he is on the mend :)

What a frightening thing to happen. I hope you will be reporting this to the manufacturer and perhaps the Trading Standards too. Unfortunately there is still no British Standard for pet cages but I do feel as there are so many people using them now that it is about time that there was, I know I would certainly buy with the kite mark.
Hi. I was just glad my boy was ok. I have three of these cages which have been fine up until now. They were quite expensive. This is the first time this has happened. I did go and get another cage but when I told the supplier they were very insistant the manufacturers were contacted, so they are taking it up for me. They wanted pictures as well which I emailed them before throwing it away. Quite honestly I wanted it out of the house as it did shake me up. I think it hit me afterwards that it could have been so much worse. He was a lucky boy.
How awful. One of my pups last year got their jaw stuck at the bottom of the cage! It was a nightmare I can tell you. We were more stressed out than the pup. Luckily when we all managed to relax he got his jaw free himself, but I really did think that I was going to end up with a pup with a broken jaw!
How terrible for you. My little man who is normally a loony amazed me by how calm he was. I know I hurt him pulling his foot off the metal and quite expected him to bite me but all he wanted was a cuddle and kisses by the time I'd got him free. I thought he'd be put off his cage yet as soon as we got back from the vets he ran straight into it and lay down. Dogs never seem to stop amazing me.

I've had the jaw thing happen once

Now I fit wooden boards to the insides of any crates I use for puppies small enough for this to happen to.

Hope he is alright. Poor little chap.
I had one of mine tear a claw clean off by getting his paw trapped once.
Hi Sandra. Happy New Year
He's recovering well. In fact acting like nothing has happened. He does do a tap dance routine on my wooden floors though as hes got 12 staples on his foot, bless him.

glad to hear he is on the mend. We have got a cage for our new puppy so will take extra care to check its ok :) thanks for letting us all know your experience as it might help stop anyone else`s dog getting hurt
thanks
Thanks Lynnt
That was my idea. If one person reads this and checks their cage then it will have done some good. I've been lucky. It makes me feel sick thinking what could of happened if he had panicked or it had gone through a vein.
Just wanted to thank everyone for their messages and get well emails.
The little man is doing well and the last two staples come out in a few days. He has a lovely little red booty to wear out walking now while the wound fully heals.
Thankyou again :)
I saw a nasty event at a show about a year ago, one of those elastic ties was being used to keep a show bag on top of a cage but the hooks on the tie were facing inwards.
The dog in the cage hooked his eyelid on the hook, because it was in the cage it took quite a while for someone to get the dog free, fortunatly the dog was not seriously hurt but it could have been a lot worse.
Please make sure if you use these elastic ties put them on so that the hooks point out of the cage away from your dog.
