what are the signs when a dog does its cruciate?

i "suspect" my taRA  may have:rolleyes: when she gets up she really carries the leg, after a while she will put it down but is not sound.

(i cant see any lumps/bumps/holes/scratches/cant feel any heat)

Hi Michelled

When my dogs cruciate was going the symptoms that she had were lameness and really bad stiffness when getting up, as the cruciate got worse so did the symptoms. She also bunny hopped when taken up the stairs (original vet thought HD, specialist confirmed cruciate degenerating, we had x-rays of the hips done by our vet and then sent off but when she went to the specialist he also did x-rays of hip and knees and found the problem)
Good luck with your dog.

My Levi has just done his too. It was much more sudden than that though, we were out in the fields last thursday in the snow, and he just simply started to limp, badly though. He wouldn't put the foot down at all. I didn't see him have any sort of stumble, slip or knock. One minute he was fine and the next he wasn't. He's on Metacam, and I got him some Glucosamine and Condroitin tablets, the vet want's to operate in the next few days, but I'm not keen to jump in too soon with surgery. I've been quoted £420 for the op, but I've also already paid £150 for X-rays and Metacam.

I've not decided yet what I'm going to do.

ok seems general consenus is strained but not snapped (sounds like youve snapped yours nursey :( ) ive stuck her on no exercise/cage rest & put her on some anti-flamiteries, & will see if she gets any better.
shes 9 now & i dont work her, & she has a heartblock, so abit wary about putting her thru a big op:eek:

nursey ive read that if the ligament has totally gone, then it wont grow back, but not sure how true this is:confused:

Yep  when Willow did hers it was sudden but being a loony Wuss it follows :D running one minute totally of her leg the next.
Your right about it not growing back Michelle but my vet explained that it could be treated without surgery just a very very long time on cage rest  until  the knee joint stablises and more chance of arthritis so in our case felt the surgery was the best way to go. Willow will be 9 in April but was otherwise as fit as a fiddle before she did this, has been fun keeping her from jumping about
