I have a 12 week old westie and since I have had him seems to have suffered with runny poo! At first I thought it was the Bakers diet, so started to change that to pedigree, and then read that pedigree wasnt much better. Now after constant referring to the forum am trying him on JWB. Problem is he has diarroeah again and it has been quite green and smelly. He seems to have worms which i guess he got from his mum, could this be the problem or could it be something else he has eaten? I dont want to go backwards with the diet, so am doing home cooked chicken and rice and slowly introducing the JWB to that. Are westies very sensitive or is this puppies in general?

Poor thing. I was once told that pups are born with worms so firstly get him to vets and get the tablets down him. I think changing his food again might not help. When you see the vet he may tell you to starve him for 24hours. That usually works with my girls. Sorry if this is no help. Hope he gets better soon.

I'm surprised that the breeder didnt give you details of when he was wormed this has to be continued and usually the vet will give you the tablets and information with his vacinations.
Worms can cause diahorrea and sometimes they can vomit them up if badly infested.
I personally would change to a dry food as I dont like bakers or Pedigree but that is my choice I feed Arden Grange.
You need to visit the vet for worm treatment as over the counter is of no use in my opinion.
Starve for 24 hours and then chicken and rice in small meals for a day or two then wean him back onto  your chosen food.
It can be difficult to starve a young pup so I have been known to give a little dry cake or arrowroot biscuits to take away the hunger pangs if necessary.(advise from my vet)

Thanks for your replies. When I got Jak, the breeder said that he had been wormed so I straight away saw the vet and got a further course of treatment. As regard the food, I did starve him for 24 hours...reassuring to know that was ok to do. I have put him onto rice and chicken and am slowly introducing the the dry food JW to that. There are what appear to be little white eggs in his poo. They look more like little balls than little grains of rice as I have heard them described. Do worming tablets make the eggs come out too?

yes I would go back to the vet for another course of treatment some dogs can have a big worm infestation I think it depends on the mother whether she was wormed correctly too but not sure on that one .
Never actually had a dog with worms to be honest just what I have read on the subject.

good Luck

Hi kiz,
I was told that the worming tablets will make some worms come out but as the worms goes in cycles and you have to break this cycle you have to keep worming until they have gone. By what you're saying it does sound like your puppy still has worms so please return to your vet and worm him again.

When I got my puppy (he is a Westie to) I was given a piece of paper stating worming records please do not rely on this in being the truth. A puppy having worms can make his stools very runny do keep and eye on this as if it gets very bad the pup can get severally ill, my puppy was so infested with worms they where in his vomit and diarrhoea he even collapsed due to them and his stomach to this day is very sensitive. I had to keep worming him every two weeks as they where that bad :(

When changing his food slowly do it over 10 days as pups stomachs are very sensitive. I've had to do a lot of research and taken much advice from people on food for my puppy as he has many allergies and stomach problems JW is a good food but if it does not work out try Wofcol salmon and potatoes, Burns or Naturediet.

I hope your puppy is a lot better soon. :)

Are you thoroughly overcooking the rice, so that it's much stickier than people eat it? If not the little white bits are probably undigested rice - this always happens with mine when I give them left-over rice after a curry or chinese.
