Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Transfer Of Ownership - Puppy Returned & No KC Doc's
- By Lynne [gb] Date 04.01.06 10:10 UTC
Hello,  I have had a puppy returned but unfortunately the owner did not bring the KC registration documents with the puppy.  I have phoned them to remind them but my main worry is that if they do not sign them where do I stand?  I have contacted the KC but they just say that there is nothing they can do, the previous owner must sign.

The puppy is absolutely fine and she was returned to me under no bad terms what so ever, it was just one of those unforseen circumstances.  The previous owner said that he would sign and post them but as yet I have not received them.

What should I do?  The puppy was returned last Tuesday so I have not had her home long.

I would give it til the weekend then gentle remind them about the forms by phone, not much else you can do but be nice and keep on reminding them.

Lynne are you sure the people DID transfer the ownership to their name? So many pet buyers don't.

Hello - yes they did transfer ownership as the KC did say that the puppy was not registered in my name anymore.  I am proabably thinking too far ahead but I would just like a back up plan!  Thanks for the replies

Hi I had the same problem with one of my pups that was returned. The chap stopped answering my phonecalls in the end. I eventually got them back after 8 weeks after sending him a text saying i would be contacting my solicitor about the none return of the papers he rang straight back and said he would post them that day.

I would give them a few more days then ring them back. the kc can not do anything i rang them just to chack they had been changed over to the new owner and they had.

Are you planning to give them money for the pup when rehomed?  If so you could say the money received from his new people will not be passed on without recieving documents in exchange.

Thanks Isabel - they did not want any money for the pup and I said that I may keep her if everything works out ok as I have already kept one of her brothers.  A very good friend of mine was interested in taking her as she was in a better situation to provide the puppy with what she needs.  When I phoned the gentleman on Monday I said that I may rehome her but under no circumstance will she be sold on and if my friend did not want her I would keep her.  He said that it was absolutely fine.  So I did not give any money as he did not want any.  Thank you for the replies.

Just for your peace of mind Lynne don't forget that post is still taking a bit longer to get through in some areas as there is still a backlog from christmas and the bank holidays - give it till the weekend :)

If you are keeping him, or giving him to a friend does it really matter?  Or does he appear to have show prospects?

hi isabel but could the old owner not come and take the dog back in the future if she doesnt have the papers ,how does it work is it the one who has the dog or the one whos name is on the papers

No I don't think so, it seems to be a bit of a grey area but ownership of a dog appears to hinge on far more than this and posession tends to count for a lot.

To be honest i'd give them until the end of the week and just knock at there address and ask them to sign the paper work as it is important.

good luck

Warm regards susan
