Topic Dog Boards / General / PETS Scheme about to change??
- By aboladeras [es] Date 01.01.06 16:47 UTC
Hi,

One breeder has told me this morning that the PETS scheme is about to change. Apparently people from the EU will be able to import their dogs to the UK after only 21 days following the rabbies jab. Can anybody confirm whether this is true??? I've checked DEFRA's web site and there's nothing of this sort in there.

Thanks in advance!!! :)

Yes it does look like this is going to happen!!

Maybe if you are considering this you really do need to rethink about having a SWD

are there any articles/websites with details of the changes??

Was in Dogworld a couple of weeks ago.  I think that it should only be for breeders and people who know about dogs well, not the GP, or we could be ending up with a lot of diseases that we've never had here before.

From Our Dogs 25th November issue there was an article that the EU was trying to bring the UK inline with the rest of Europe by 2008 so not imminently

that be good if it comes into fouces for new blood line and at lease the owner of the pup can socalize it straight away than waiting to the pup nearley a year old,

Hi Briedog,

Just to let you know that yesterday we got our SWD from Diane  We're so excited!! His name's Ricky and he's gorgeous. He's mostly black with some white strips, just like Tango. We can't wait to get him socialised as soon as he's 11 weeks and has received all his jabs. In the meantime, we'll keep you posted as to his development.

Regards,

Alex & Xandra

I haven't imported, or used the pet scheme, but a friend of mine did. She brought a bitch into the country just over a year ago. Unfortunately the bitch died just before xmas. There are a lot of discussions going on about the cause, but one of them is a parasite that sits in the blood for up to 2 years (can't remember the name at the moment) Personally i think that the rules should be tightened, along similar lines to New Zealand. They insist that EVERY dog is blood tested before being allowed into the country. If this had been done maybe whatever killed my friends bitch would have been found earlier, and dealt with. JMHO.

Congratulations!

Good luck with Ricky, Alex. They are such a lovely breed :) I am trying to convince my OH that our next dog should be a SWD (well, they are only little....compared to our current two anyway).

May you have many happy years together :)

Oh, thanks Shaynlola. :) Incidentally, "Lola" happens to be one of the names we'd have chosen for our dog had it been a bitch.

Take care :))

I will add this question to this thread as it is very much related.

I have a friend who is looking to import a pup into the UK from an EU country, I know all the rules for the PET Scheme but wondered if they apply to young pups under 12 weeks old. If it is so does this mean she will have to wait till the pup is 9 months old before it can travel or does britian allow pups under 12 weeks to travel as long as they have had their normal vacs and are microchipped like Belgium or Sweden?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 03.01.06 20:13 UTC
It will actually be 10 months at least, as the Rabies Vaccination can't be given until 3 months of age, then there has to be at least 30 days before the blood test checking titre levels,a dn if this is sufficient then the pup can come in 6 months after the blood test.

In my breed we have just had an awful situation with at first there being some misunderstandings by the Overseas Vet between the EU Pet Passport requiremetns and that of the UK Pets Travel Scheme (also commonly called the Pet Passport scheme), which initially delayed an adult dog getting his blood test done, he then arrived into the UK in December only to be found not to have a working Microchip and had to be shipped back, and the whole 7 month long procedure (Chipping, another Rabies shot, month wait and blood test, and then 6 month wait after that) has to be done again.:mad::mad:

As Brainless says they would be 10months before they could come in.

Due to the parasite problem this is why you should go to a very knowledgeable breeder, who knows about such problems.  I can tell you now tht not every one in Spain does, so doesn't treat their dogs generally the way that they should be.  Luckily for me, my dogs breeder knew all the precautions to take and always has done.
