Hi,
Are there any mad people still up :) to give advice on whelping???
Our bitch had her first pup just under 2 hours ago(no real contractions just easily popped out!) she has continued panting since but with no further contractions. She is happy in herself(apart from being in labour!) but i am beginning to worry about that 21/2 hr wait period, should i be calling the vet????
Any help would be appreciated(this is our 1st litter!)

Hi!
Just seen your post. Has anything happened yet? If she isn't having any contractions, or is straining in any way, I would not worry just yet. Try taking her for a short run, maybe round the house. This might help her along. Don't forget to bring a towel and a torch, should she deliver a pup when outside. Also make sure everything is as calm and relaxed around her, as possible. If nothing has happened when 4 hours has passed from the first pup, I'd give the vet a ring. Earlier if the vet is a long distance away. She might need a shot of oxytocin, to help with the contractions. Good luck,
Karen
Hi,
No nothing still has happened:(
She isnt contracting at all just panting.Pup has suckled for 5 minutes, then she had had enough and refuses to lie down and feed him.Took her outside and she is digging and trying to push(to do a poo?) but as soon as we bring her back in she stops everything!!!!
Have just taken pup away out of whelping box(although he is safe and warm) as i think she feels tense him being there.Have i done right??? just thought maybe if she has no distractions she may feel relaxed enough to start again?!
Any advice greatly appreciated!
I'd give the vet a call.
Rather be safe than sorry - I had my vet out twice to my Boxer bitch.
He checked that there weren't any puppies stuck etc.
Boxers can be notoriously slow whelpers, yes my girl managed to whelp hers
all naturally in the end. But a large white bitch puppy (2nd pup) was holding things up
and when she was finally born the others came at hourly intervals.
Perhaps that's whats causing the problems with your girl - a large puppy that she can't pass?

did she retain the placenta or did it pass with the pup because if it was retained she will show panting and the occasional push as she tries to get rid of the placenta or it could be a stuck pup either way i would take her to the vets

Hi!
If she seems to be pushing when taken outside, and nothing has happened yet, I would ring the vet. If she by now has delivered another puppy, give her one, maybe two hours if no contractions, befor starting to worry again. Try to be as calm as possible, keep lights down and not too many bystanders. Bitches like to whelp in a "safe" place, away from "dangers".
Good luck,
Karen

Just to keep everyone informed

Hi Sam, this is probably a bit late but I would call the vet as your bitch is having a large litter isn't she.... is this the bitch that was showing 10 or 11 on the scan? It's going to be a long night/day for you. Best wishes, Jane

Hi Sam,
good luck. I'm afraid I wasn't awake in the early hours. How many do you have now?
sarah

So glad to hear everything seems to be well! Didn't know anything about the bitch, the breed or this litter. Answered at work, really no time to try to find out from earlier threads, either :-( . Does anyone have any news?
Keeping everything crossed!
Best wishes,
Karen

All the best,

Hi All,
Thanks for your kind & helpful words:)
Storm eventually had 11 pups(so sam the scan lady was spot on),we were up to 9 when Carolyn informed you all,we took her to the vets for some oxytocin and she gave birth to a further 2 dead pups:(
Ive had a huge cry, losing 4 pups,3 of which didnt come with bag or placenta so obviously suffocated. She was in no distress throughout labour and didnt have long contractions at all really,so although i feel as guilty as hell that its my fault, dont think i could have done much more.
Thanks again, will have another good cry tonight then concentrate on my beautiful 7 remaining pups.
