Hi there,
Just wondered what breeds tend to smell the most (a bit of a strange question I know!)? I was told that breeds with an oily undercoat smell more than other dogs... what kind of dogs does that include? Labs? Huskies? Newfoundlands? Our neighbour downstairs has the smelliest German Shepherd... he's a guide dog and he's lovely but very, very strong smelling... you can even sometimes smell him from the communal stair when he is in the flat. That's not typical is it? I also walk a Jack Russell and she is slightly wirehaired, she doesn't smell of much unless she gets wet. Does that mean that wirehaired breeds are less likely to smell? I also heard that greyhounds and salukis don't get the doggy smell, is that true or is it an exaggeration? Any ideas?

Goldens tend to have that "doggy smell" , i've met some pretty smelly shar-peis

Malamutes are none smelly generally even though they have a thick undercoat :)

Huskies have very little smell.

I've noticed that dogs are more likely to smell than bitches; also that smooth, single-coated breeds are less likely to smell than those with oily or wiry coats.
Some breeds definitely smell more than others. Belgians don't smell - I would say if anything they have almost a "perfume" which is not doggie. Occasionally the pads will smell but only if you get close :P

The smelliest dogs I've met are Komondors, otterhounds and Spinoni; sorry to any owners - they're all lovely dogs, but ....!!!

Chesapeakes really smell because of the oil in their coats, TM don't even though they have a really thick coat.
huskies have little or no 'doggy' smell. interestingly, people who are allergic to dogs often find they cope much better around huskies than they do with other breeds.

Irish Water Spaniels and Curly Coated Retrievers are stinky I think.

Otterhounds honk the most IME..........
My golden doesn't smell unless he gets wet and then he smells doggy for a while but other than that he smells ok, if he did he would be getting extra baths. I think there is nothing worse than wet dog smell! Don't shout at me just my opinion.
Komondor's !! I remember being at Crufts once and there were a load of school children around the ring, a lot of visitors and a few show people. One came running passed as it went round the ring and all of our heads turned in the opposite direction :d I've never smelt anything like it!
I must admit that I bath my breed more than I did the Pomeranian's and the boys are more smelly, but a lot of non-doggy people say that they don't smell too bad.

Oh I second that! My Father was Master of Mink Hounds many moons ago, and the Otter Hounds...peeeeeeuw! But a better dog (sibes apart ;) ) Ive yet to meet.:)
My Siberian on the other hand..MMmmmm.. could bury my nose all day in him :D He's odourless but his coat does tend to trap 'outside' smells, when he lies under the Pines in the garden he comes in smelling all sweet and woody, its a lovely smell, OH says he can tell which perfume Im wearing when he gets greeted at the door by the dog (Im either cuddling poor wuluf too much..or Drenching abit toooooo much Chanel !!??).... But when it comes to rolling in fox poo... OOOOoooh its like Old spice to our boy, splash it all over :( (probably smells better than Old Spice truth to tell??!!) ;)
must admit tho' I
Love a dog to smell doggy :D

Elkhounds are a breed which have no doggy odour...not even when wet! Must say the Shibas are pretty much the same aswell! Just as well really or with 5 dogs in the house it could get pretty iffy

Basenjis don't have the doggy odour.

Briards have very dry skin, so don't tend to smell........until they get wet, but with that amount of hair it would be a miracle if it didn't trap smell. That and the beard that smells permanently of raw meat and tripe in our house, it really is an acquired taste

My boy has the most attractive odour, the smell comes from his feet, I could sniff his pads all day...(I know I'm strange)
My bitch on the other hand has no doggy smell at all, just what I call "her smell" which I love, she's just finished her first season and although I was vigilant on keeping her clean, especially with her being so hairy, there was never any definable odour.

not wiered - i could sniff the tops of my dogs muzzles all day if i was could

Digestive feet by any chance ? :)

My Lab gets a rancid, oily smell around her neck and I believe the nylon collar contributes to this by holding in odour. When I wash the pooch I soak the collar in floor cleaning liquid for an hour or so. Then I launder it with my regular load, putting the collar inside a heavy work sock, so as not to bash up the inside of my dryer with the metal parts.

my bearded collies dont smell but they have a thick dry harsh coat with a undercoat my rough collies didnt smell either luckily!

I remember walking past the Irish Wolfhoulds at Machester dog show years ago and nearly passing out from the smell! Sort of a cross between strong doggy odour and smelly socks. I must admit that most wire haired dogs I've met smell doggy to me, but most spitz breeds don't seem to smell. Also a lot of gundogs and spaniels smell clasically doggy to my nose. I can't say I've noticed with greyhounds. I suppose they don't as the kennels where my step dad's were boarded didn't smell of dog. The kennels did smell slightly like a hamster cage as there were wood chippings down and some of the greyhounds were not what you'd call houseproud. I don't remember the dogs smelling when I was handing out hugs though!
My TM is totally odour free - he smells like clean clothes do when they have been dried outside. He doesn't even smell doggy when he's wet. They are also reputedly good for people with allergies and it seems true in my case. My chow didn't smell doggy either, though my collie x retriever did. Shar-Pei are strange smelling, but not at all doggy and they don't seem to make your house smell like some breeds do. Lots of people don't like the smell of the horsecoats as they can smell very musky, but the brushcoats don't so much smell as have a faint perfume - it's lovely. My longcoated shar-pei didn't smell at all. You'd think the more coat, the more smell wouldn't you?
I'm a bit paranoid, thinking maybe my dogs/house does smell but I've become immune to it, but my landlord isn't a dog person and he's always said how fresh and non doggy my house smells. I think he's surprised, hence the unprovoked comments! :)
Maybe the guide dog needs a bath if he smells that strongly? I have a couple of friends with GSD's and I can always smell them in their houses (one has hers bathed at the groomers frequently so it's not hygiene), yet my friend with the shar-pei, I can't smell them at all. Mind you, GSD's kick my asthma/eczema off in minutes of contact and shar-pei don't affect me at all, so some dogs are definitely more smelly and/or allergenic than others.
Hello. I have a wonderful, very friendly, smart curly coated retriever. I was recently horrified to find out that my dog smells because of his oil based coat I guess. I was bothered/apprised by not so nice (the one who told me) Condo neighbor (She actually lives about 6 doors down the hallway) that my wonderful dog (who usually gets a weekly bath after swimming) that he stinks and is stinking up the hallway. Of course, she lives next to the trash, (which upon my smelling investigation smelled horribly until recently-it's been perfumed or something to fix it). My dog dies pet therapy and gets hugged and pet numerous times a day without a complaint. After hearing of his alleged smell, I had numerous people smell him and embarrassingly told them why and they all said he doesn't smell bad and that she was beyond rude. I asked my neighbor today if my dog smelled to her and she said no initially, but that after we were there for awhile that he had a negative smell (meaning it takes a while to smell him.) And she said when it was hot in particular the hallway smelled bad and she thinks it's because of my dog. And because I have a horrible business manager who targets ne fir no reason because I didn't like her taking over our common space for her office although she already had one and she , a smoker, put smelly cigarette ashtrays (because she likes to smoke) very close to our building. She used these bad smelling complaints against my dog to her advantage and hold a disparate embarrassing hearing I didn't attend as I was running an event that night (as I told her) and she threatened removal of my dog and fined me $100. I'm probably going to appeal as I took some actions to eradicate and until today thought it was the issue only of the unfriendly neighbor WY down the hall who bitchy told me your dog stinks and is stinking the hallways we hardly ever go down and she had the smelly trash right next to her (Should the business manager be fined for thay?-LOL). Now that I know it's a real issue, do you all know any ways to improve a curly coated retriever s smell caused I guess from his oily coat? Please help. My dog is so friendly and wonderful (unlike unfortunately many dogs in my building whose owners haven't socialized their dog and they think it's okay for their dog (particularly small dogs) to go after my dog, routinely growl and bark at him ad nauseum) and loves everyone and volunteers. Please help so he no longer smells (something I can't smell and obviously many others ).. but it's a big problem and causing me harm and according to these neighbors harming them. Ideas? Thx!! And sorry this is so long-I'm understandably upset and find it strange that it only became a problem recently (maybe due to the heat this summer.) We lived here for quite a while and it's the first complaint. But I've also been sick and maybe we're (my dog and i) spending more time at the condo. Thx again. Please share your expertise on eliminating the smell from the oil based coat of my wonderful curly coated retriever (who normally gets Soo much attention and love and returns it-but unfirtunately he's the only Dog on my floor in a ln otherwise building occupied by many dogs and thus also likely surrounded by unfortunately not the biggest doglovers-an understatement.) So please help. I'd love your valuable assistance and again sorry for the length of this post seeking assistance.

Stick with your other thread or this could become very confusing!
