I'd like to be able to add my niece's name here - unfortunately I can't :(
I discovered at Xmas that she is smoking - not a lot, but obviously it is difficult to stop. Her grandfather died of lung cancer and as a student (she's 21) she can't afford it either. I'm very disappointed and sad for her :(
Daisy

Ok I am putting my name on here as I really want to give up, I do Thai boxing and when the time is right I want to fight but that is never going to happen if I dont stop smoking as I wont be fit enough.
Mary
Hag with a fag(for the time being)
Count me in. It will be the first time I've attempted to quit, am terrified that I'll be even grumpier than usual but I really want to STOP. Am fed up being a slave to such an anti social habit. Have already told family and friends I'm stopping on New Year, probably will have no family or friends come the second of January. Feeling very nervous about it all.
we will all have to help each other, and its going to be hard work but i will give it my best shot
Yes, I know it will be incredibley hard for me but I will try my very best. My whole family smokes, My six children (GIRLS 13-14-16-16-BOYS 18-19) All of them except for my oldest lad lives in my house. I have already told them, starting from New Years day, no smoking inside the house at all, including their bedrooms. I have realised my house must stink.I am really going to try hard. This month I have tried to cut back the cigarettes, I am currently smoking 11 fags a day. Extremely good from what it originally was. Anyways, all the best to all that will be joining me on New Years.

I though that you were Riona ??

Daisy
I thought that too !!
1 week ago my youngest daughter 12 told me she smoked. Eventually I came to terms with this and thoroughly persuaded my daughter, she wasnt having it so I had no other choice than to accepted this idea. So now we are called the Entire Smoker Family. My two sons 16 & 17. And all my daughters, 12, 14, 15,17. Including me and my OH. Just like Lola/Riona/Whatever her name is.. I am making all of my children and OH smoke outside and not in their bedrooms. I am cutting down because I Just know I wont be able to cope. I have plenty of stress as it is. I would love to put my childrens names on here on their behalfs but I know they would object and have a sneaky fag when out the house.
Oh well, Ill keep on at them

I am quite new here, can I join you all, I gave up smoking for 10 months, then stupidly started again!!!
Of course you can Mags :-) Welcome aboard :-D
As someone who stopped smoking nearly two years ago now I thought I might be able to help you all. There are a few things to remember that, to me, are the most important things to keep with you :
1) You are NOT giving up smoking - you are stopping an old habit - if you keep on thinking of it as 'giving up' then you will have a harder time to succeed, you have nothing to give up but a lot to gain, not just money but the ability to finally breath in a lung full of air without coughing/wheezing
2) Yes, you will have to take your mind off of smoking, times when you normally have one will be the hardest - breakfast, lunchtime etc so realise that, understand that it is hard but that you are a strong person and you WILL do it so for the times when it is hardest take up something else like sucking on a sugar free mint (it's not the same but it can help)
3) Get a hobby, something new that you have never done before and that is not pshycologically connected to smoking - cross stitch, learn a new language anything to help take your mind off things for a while
4) Realise that the 'craving' will not simply dissappear - it will get better in time but it will be with you for a long while yet, even after nearly two years (and yes my OH smokes but not in the house bless him) I still get the odd craving and I find myself reaching for an imaginery packet of ciggies :( if my OH has just had a ciggie I can smell it on him and it's like a constant reminder but it's not that hard anymore and I can fight the urge with a quick clean of the kitchen :)
5) Remember all the time that if you pick up a ciggie and decide to smoke it then you are not weak, it's hard don't be tough on yourself and you will be free soon - but if, like me, you hated the dizzy sick feeling that you got from your first ciggie (and if you actually don't like feeling sick and dizzy !) keep that thought with you and realise that when you do lite up after a day or even a few hours you will get that feeling again - is it worth it ?
You can do it girls (and boys) it is hard I wont lie to you - but it is worth it, I really do feel better, food tastes great and my kids love hugging me now as I smell of 'mummy' and not an ashtray :)
HTH, good luck, Tara x

When I gave up I used the tube from a biro and held it and sucked it. Had the action that you miss, and the inhalation but none of the smoke.
Might help someone.
Lea/

Grumpy? GRUMPY? I was a bitch troll from hell when I gave up smoking  One day I was so bad that OH threw money at me and told me to go and buy some cigs

No way, I really really wanted to give up and I kept reminding myself how much I really wanted to give up. For whatever reason you are giving up, hold that thought and remind yourself everytime you waver. One of the best things I've done and BTW marriage survived too :D
Here i am Olivia :-) What day are we all quiting?
Ok here goes adding my name to the rest....
I did say a few years ago i would stop if i could have..just one more puppy..well i got my puppy but didnt give up the cigs .what day are we starting on....maybe if i can now stop the dirty habit i could possibly ask for another puppy
By Lea

Think you may need to
STOP FIRST this time Polly ;)
Lea:)
 Its worth a try....I gotta have a good incentive....
Hi Polly,
hadn't occurred to me to ask for an incentive, so after reading your post went and asked the OH what he would give me? Says he'll take me back to Rome again, did try the puppy angle but no joy there, Oh well I guess Rome is not too bad.

Ooh i wish i could stop, i did it before, for 2 years and stupid me decided to start again

I neeeeed to stop as im getting married in July and after that we are gonna try for a baby so i really need to stop, i have a problem with my job too cos they allow smoking in the office and seen as its a boring job i smoke more than ever now, even tho i roll em!

Count me in!!
This will be the third time I'll have stopped. First time I stopped for 4and a half years -then my job changed and I started again

. Then I gave up for 3 months (earlier this year) so that I could get my pup.
Hanging about in the garden, waiting for the pup to do her business, will be the worst time. Can't take cross stitch or knitting out there, can I? :-)
I found the ?"inhilator"? the best way. It's like a dummy cigarette with a nicotine cartridge that you have to insert. And you can now get a lot of help from your pharmacy - lots of good advice and free patches/gum etc.
So yes, please, count me in! When do we start - January 1st?
And just think - you stop smoking every time you go to bed, don't you? So that's the first 7/8/9 hours taken care of.......!!!

I gave up for 5 years and started again!! Have smoked now for 2 years but not since the 17th as this cold has kicked it out of me. Dreading new year though as I wil be tempted. Once a smoker, always a smoker, smoking or not!
Hello all!!
Would just like to offer a ray of sunshine to anyone who tries to quit the ciggies anytime soon.
I smoked for 21 years and tried to give up 7 times and the longest was for 3 months. This year
I gave up on the 19th May and as of this moment have only had one puff since (the evils of booze

) and that nearly killed me! So have managed just over 7 months and feel soooo strong about it and really feel I've kicked it this time. The biggest difference this time was that I seemed to feel so confident this was it. I planned on using the patches and had the 24 hour ones at first, but reduced it to the 18 hour ones after 3 days. I used those for 2 weeks then forgot to put one on in the morning and only realised at 4pm and decided to see if I could manage the rest of the day withoutone and I never looked back (so far...

)
My point being, you have to really want to do it you'll have a much bigger chance of succeeding.
GOOD LUCK

Jess. xx

All day I've been watching this thread thinking, 'Oh no I cant', but here I am and I'll give it my best shot! :) (she says with chest puffed out with pride.)
I almost saluted to you all then

I felt like I'd just been recruited to become a member of the 'lets quit regiment' :D
So, whens D-DAY? :)
Thats the spirit!!!
OK Troops.... Battle orders will be posted in the Morning... your mission should you choose to accept!
(
This message will NOT self destruct in 5 seconds!)

(Libbbbbbbbbbbberty?? where fore art thou!!??)D-Day - 1st of January 2006Thanks to Tara,Lea,Cheryl,Daisy and Jessie... we'll need more of your support in the weeks to come!! ;)I for one am terrified! woke up this morning all super confident, decided I would get into training for the dreaded day (Que: Theme tune from Rocky!) and see how long I could go without a cig...
Ive had two already! :(
LOL - I also woke up this morning thinking well if i'm gonna quit, i may as well not have a ciggie this morning......i managed half an hour

But believe me, come 1st Jan i will do it :-D
Me too, and then promptly had 1 or, don't wont to say how many!!!! Then started thinking , " maybe cigars would be o.k. to smoke??? " Looks like my addict side is starting already to play games with me. Think I'm gonna need loads of support on this . Huskygal is the STOP time at midnight, or the next morning when we all get up? It's great that some ex smokers are here giving support , thanks to you all.
I'd say lets do it as of midnight :-D :-D I'm being very brave in saying it :-)

your a better woman than me!!
uh oh.. this does not bode well, I was going to say the morning!!
see already Im putting it off!!!!????? aaaargh!:D :D
Ok then.....I don't mind, More ciggies for me :-D I'll stay up all night and smoke my head off lol
Yes, count me in. My family smoke so Its going to be hard. I think i'll start by cutting down, because Ive smoked all my liife since 14.
Good Luck to fellow competitors,
Vicky x

Instead of giving up at midnight why not make it from waking up on 1st. I am thinking if you are at a party and had a few drinks your willpower will not be strong and you don't want to start off feeling a failure. If you have a hangover on 1st this will help give you a kickstart.
Think of strategies for substituting ciggies. I know not everyone thinks this a good idea but I did succumb to mints and they did help me. My mum chewed gum which helped her. Friend who recently gave up didn't need anything like that and she smoked for 35ish years. Point is do what you need to to succeed.
Thanks CherylS :-) I already have my Inhalor here :-D I'm all prepared for the 1st :-)
Ok i am at a new years eve party...so i can stop from midnight...i cant smoke and drink i gets tooooo intoxicated if i do both :rolleyes:dont ask me why....So i will give up the dreaded weed just before midnight....hopefully i will look on here after lunch new years day and give you all a update....good luck everyone...
5 ciggies today and god i want one but im not going to give in, i have only got 5 left so after that i am stopping cold turkey time for me wish me luck everyone :-)
I am so pleased i have figured out how to do the smileys now :-)

Welcome aboard Vikki!!!! :D
The more the merrier!.....(or will we be 'Tetchier' come the day!!?? ;) )
Thanks Chez!! keep the tips coming!!
Im reeeeeeeally panicking now..havent got my 'crutch' sorted yet (oooer!?) will I use mints..dont like chewing gum..sigh..think I will feel like Bet Lynch with one of those inhilator things??!!... might try Lea's pen idea.
((((((((( Nobody Panic!!!!! ))))))))))))))
So is that the dreadful dozen now, or are we a larger merrier band now, ha ha.! Chewing gum furiously as I type. and that's without giving up smoking!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The mere thought , sorry reality is making me chew gum relentlessly. It will be worth it, I'm desparately holding that thought, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArg!

I have never smoked never ever even tried it .....
Now.... NO I am not a goody goody but I hate people smoking!!! cause of what it is doing to your body and your pocket... I know that sounds awful but my hubby is a smoker my Mum and Dad both smoked I just never have ...
the reason I am saying this is that I really admire all of you for .....going for it!!!
good luck it must be very very difficult .....
just want to let you all know that if you feel the urge and need someone to talk you out of it just PM me anytime I will try and help....
Roni
Thanks Roni :-) That is so kind of you
