Just got back from walk. Paris' recall isn't so hot lately so went out with a pocket full of turkey. Off lead for about 10 minutes and concentrating on the recall and doing well when we reach the park.  Head towards the woods that run alongside when I notice quite a few dogs running around together so knowing my dog can be a bit iffy around other dogs started to change direction but it was too late as a Samoyd (or something like one, think it was a cross as was a big as the labs) and a Lab came bounding over quickly followed by 2 more Labs and another Samoyd X looking dog.  Two women walking together had about 10 dogs between them and weren't the least bit concerned these dogs were bothering me. Surrounded by these 5 dogs nudging my pocket (remember full of turkey) and jumping up and down in front of me and my own dog now getting pretty ar*y, running around in circles barking, I had to shout 3 bl**dy times at these women to call their dogs off.  I could almost see them tch tch and sighing as they obviously couldn't see what the problem was.

What is wrong with these people?

Sorry Cheryl I know its bl**dy annoying when things like this happen - but I have visions of the headlines "WOMAN MUGGED FOR A POCKET FULL OF TURKEY :D

Poor Paris - he thought he was going to miss out on all his treats!

You can just imagine what the two women were saying, can't you - all that fuss with only 1 dog - how would she manage with 10 of them!

Mugged for turkey :D  That's how it felt though.  In one respect I suppose it was a good thing they were more interested in that than in Paris because she doesn't like being approached by dogs and they were ignoring her even though she was making quite a fuss.  Normally I would ask the owner if I can treat their dog and this helps my dog to see that other dogs are generally fine and them approaching is not a bad thing.  Couldn't that with Labs though could I? Would never have got away :D

Worst of it was that when they eventually sauntered away my dog chased after the last one and I think she thought she had "seen them off" which is just the sort of behaviour I am trying to break her of.

Yes, your description does sound very funny although I guess your not laughing. Those ladies must of thought that you were encouraging their doggies to misbehave and you must of looked like the pied piper to them. They might even have logged onto CD by now, to complain about the mad woman in the park, who tried to run off with their pack! No wonder they were tutting.

Hope you have composed yourself now and that you won't be wandering about with pockets cramed with tasty nosh looking for trouble in a public area again, as I think  there is the possiblity you can be arrested for that???

So sorry to laugh, but I have a horrid sense of humour. Please feel free to lambate me.

Hmm maybe I should have just walked off and left a trail of turkey, the women might have taken more notice then :rolleyes:

I can see the funny side from an outsiders point of view, however, at the time I was really worried in case my dog started on one of them and they turned on her.  In a more controlled situation it would have been a good opportunity for me to socialise my dog with them but as it turned out I think it put back some of the work I have done with her lately with regards to meeting dogs in the park.  She was really fired up after.

To top it off, when I got home and emptied the pocket of remainder of turkey I noticed some had fallen out of the bag and that there is a hole in the pocket. I think some turkey might now be in the lining of my 'dog' jacket  :rolleyes:  Yuk, I hope not, time will tell

I had a similar thing happen today. My JRX pup is not allowed off lead yet in the park (although she goes off lead on the beach where there are no roads if she decides to run!!). She was on her extendable lead, which I shortened when I saw 4 dogs loose. A lovely spaniel ran over wanting to play, but lost interest in a minute, and ran off.
We turned to walk off and as Tansy was following us without complaint, I loosed her lead again. Suddenly this total nutcase of a spaniel came from behind bouncing around like Zebedee. Tansy promptly ran round and round the spaniel tying it's legs up in her lead. It sounds funny, but once I had them both pulling on the lead frantically, I fell over (very embarassing!!) and let go of the lead. The owner remained talking to a friend while I released the spaniel...one handed as I was holding my scared pup in the other.
I admit that I panicked slightly. An partially trained pup off lead attached to a loopy spaniel..falling flat on my face in the snow. At nearly 50, not a good look!
The spaniel ran back to it's owner who called out 'Are you Ok love?', before carrying on with her conversation.
Grrrrr...some owners!!

Spaniels are nutcases and historical long serving companions and workmates of the JRT, so no doubt, both dogs felt comfortable with the situation and with you, with your face in the mud.

My lot are terrible for running over to people that we know who have treats in their pockets and hassle them :rolleyes: They do however have to sit and take gently when asked which is getting better with time :D

You must though smell like doggy heaven with a pocket of turkey :D They can probably smell it for miles :D

Actually, the dogs have probably published the news that there is this woman carrying TURKEY at every lamp post they've passed!!

Hope you manage to get it out of your lining - I didn't one time & found one of my little dears had decided to clear it for me - by eating the lining

Its no joke though, when you are surrounded by a pack of leaping hounds - especially when they don't belong to you!

After 3 glasses of a very nice red I actually couldn't care less about the turkey in the lining

The women could have at least tried to control their dogs - they weren't taking any notice

I think I would have rescued my spaniel and checked you were ok, then fallen around laughing myself at the memory - not funny at the time of course, but looking back....! :-D

OH and his sister took Paris for long walk today and before they went I got the last turkey drumstick out the fridge and said I think this had better be the last of it and chopped it up.  OH looked and then said, you trying to get packs of dogs after us?  I think it will be a long time before I am allowed to forget about it.

Paris is a GSP BTW and loopy at the best of times but was going potty when I was surrounded by these rather well fed Labs and co. :D
