does anyone know if you can use normal toothpaste on dogs or does it have to be dog toothpaste ?? its not a major problem but sometimes she could do with a tic tac lol

Only dog toothpaste when you are cleaning their teeth, as the human kind has florine and they can't produce enough saliva or something to get rid of it.

For smelly breath use the Breath Busters they have herbs etc in them and do make the breath smell nice.

Mine always have marrowbones around twice a week which helps to keep tartar etc at bay.

Since I have been feeding raw their teeth are getting cleaner and cleaner!

But to answer you question - No, don't use human toothpaste on dogs and if your dog's breath is bad try to find the cause as it could be teeth, mouth infection, something he has eaten, stomach/liver/kidney problems etc etc

Dog toothpaste is the way to go for clean dog's teeth, I use it on both mine, although it doesn't help with bad breath unfortunately, being chicken flavour! breath busters are the answer there! good luck, and if you do decide to start cleaning your dogs teeth, take it slowly, as it's a strange sensation for them at first, it's really best to start from puppyhood!

This is obviously not a reply to your question but just a hopeful suggestion.

RMB ( RAW MEAT BONES) are all any dogs need to keep their teeth clean. My dogs teeth are imaculate and never seen a tooth brush.

My vet told me that dog toothpaste is just a gimmick and if infact every other day you just brush your dogs teeth with a toothbrush it apparently activates the saliva glands which then go on to destroy bacteria. Apparently if you keep doing this within 48hrs you should keep the bacteria levels well down, after 48hrs the bacteria levels apparently sore!!

Kass has raw meaty bones and I bought some treats the other day called 'Bonio, Breathfresh'- it says they contain mint, parsley and eucalyptus. They do smell quite minty and do the job- like I say they freshen up the breath and the bones clean the teeth:)

I agree with Pamela , I don't think you can beat meat bones,and I think I know which one my dogs prefer.
Have you tried brushing the teeth of a yampy Springer .

I had a problem cleaning the teeth of my Greyhounds, they were not too chuffed with the idea. I stopped giving bones as they started fights.

Someone kindly introduced me to 'Logic' doggie toothpaste without the brushing. The dogs just lick it off biscuit, hand whatever and it works on their teeth. (dont know the technical bit) but apparently the enzymes it contains work with their saliva on controling bacteria (I think thats it anyway) You can get it from the Vet for around £7 or on line for £4.25 & PP. My dogs love it, and saves battling with a toothbrush.

thanks for all your replys , yes my pup does eat marrow bones a few times a week and are clean i just thought that brushing them would help with she sometimes dodgey breath!! its not always bad i surpose it depends whats shes been muching !!
