Hi, Merry Christmas everybody!
Unfortunly the morning hasnt been a good start as Wheelers been nipped quite badly on the chest :( was hoping someone could advise meon how to treat the wound as a bit of his skin has peeled off :( Its very red but theres no flowing blood coming out of him.
Can anybody give me any advise on what to do?

cheers briedog, Weve done that and covered up the wound. Is it better left uncovered? Its starting to look much redder :( his Christmas pressie seemed to cheer him up though :)

These days vets tend to leave almost everything uncovered, and as far as possible also avoid stitches for more serious wounds, as it heals a lot quicker. :) Just make sure it doesn't get licked or anything.

Most wounds heal much quicker uncovered. Dressings keep in moisture which is a marvellous breeding-ground for infections. :(

I would second that JG and add that creams should not be used as they can have the same effect unless otherwise directed by the vet of course :)

I use that germolene "new skin" or suchlike. its clear stuff that is an antiseptic, and it dries like a skin over the wound.....and tastes horrid so dogs dont lick it!
I agrree that it is best to leave a wound uncovered, however if you are worried about getting dirt in it, then dress it by using only a loose piece of dry gauze...that will let air in. Dont use anything airtight. And its normal for it to look red at this stage too.

As already stated leave wound open to the air, bites are the worse thing for getting infected as there are more horrible germs in mouths than almost any other part of the body (YUK!) That's generally why the Vets don't suture them either as they tend to 'sew' in the germs in a nice warm, moisture laden environment! Perfect breeding ground for germies! Keep an eye on it, clear serous fluid oozing is normal, look out for pus, yellow or green and a smell, if that occurs you really need antibiotics and a trip to the Vet:rolleyes:

Anton bit Lastar's shoulder a few weeks ago, actually a week before LKA.  I just bathed it in salt water a few times a day and left it uncovered.  Luckily all was fine.  Hope your dogs is better soon.

When my original GSD had a hip replacement 5 years ago (a BIG wound), I was amazed at the light dressing which was put on, and which came off the first day! It healed wonderfully.

I'll have to do the same for myself as well now.  Poor Anton mistook my finger for his ball today OUCH.  They say that dogs don't have feelings but you should of seen his poor face, he kept on comong up to me and looking at my finger and feeling sorry for himself so we went out for a good run in the park to cheer him up :d

I know how you feel! My dog seems to think that my hand is connected to his rag toy
Thanks for all the help! I'll take him to the vets first thing tomorrow just to get it checked out as it still looks quite nasty :( I just hope its not affected the way he behaves with other dogs  he was quite upset after it happened and was growling at her quite fiercely (hes never aggressive towards dogs)

when i took my girl to a stud, the stud accidently tore a pad of the bottom of her paw it had to be stitched back on (it was half hanging off) and they wrapped that.
That had to stay wrapped because it was on the paw and dirt could get in. Its the only time they have put a wrap or bandage on cut or something she had and it was a nightmare to keep on she kept tearing it off.

My boy sliced a pad a few weeks back (think he did it on ice). As he removed anything used to cover it within seconds, I just kept it clean by bathing with salt water several times a day (after he'd been out) and limited his exercise. Healed up nicely within about 10 days.
