A colleague at work has bought a pedigree working labrador puppy, he is currently in field trial training and its come to light that he has myopathy (disease progression is the atrophy of temporal, cervical and leg muscles, leading to a ventroflexion of the neck, abnormal postures and movements - they can lead long healthy lives but cant get cold and cant exercise for long), he will be a very pampered house dog from now on but they wondered if there is anything that can help him? Homeopathy etc?
Pup has been withdrawn from training and is coming home for christmas where he can be kept warm, exercised lightly and lead a full life. The condition stablises by 18 months and they can live to normal lengths.
I wondered if anyone knew anyone whose Lab had this, looking for alternative treatments to ease the condition or to improve the muscle - the vets have said steroids and thats all they can do, but we all know sometimes the alternatives are the better solution. Ive had hydrotheraphy suggested as well .
Well if anyone can give some help would be most grateful.

Hydrotherapy is good, in the warmer weather... However at this time of year when the temperature dips makes the recovery from excersise much slower, even hydrotherapy... So stop hydrotherapy sessions during colder periods.
Good socialsation is a must....any nervouseness or timidity can excacerbate the 'floppiness', a confident dog will deal with this condition considerably better.
Other than rest, there is no medication that has been found to be affective...although Diazepam and Steriods have been used with effect...The Diazepam, mainly to keep a nervous dog calm and less stressful.
At around 2 years old the condition stabilizes and although you will never have a Labrador that can walk miles with you, or play and generally cause mayhem ;) he will live a full life and be a wonderful companion and house dog.
