Topic Dog Boards / Health / skin smell
- By michelled [gb] Date 18.12.05 13:30 UTC
ok, tara is 9 in feb & very healthy, active etc etc. However her skin has a funny sort of smell (for the last 6 months or so). she smells of a sort of mixture of curry & hamsters. Bathing, brushing, changing diet, doing anal glands, makes no difference.
her coat looks nice ,her skin normal,

i was just wondering if a smell like this denotes some underlying(internal) problem:confused:

someone has suggested thyriod ? b ut she shows absolutly no other signs, any other ideas?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 19.12.05 19:33 UTC
I would get it checked out.  A friend of mine from Spain came to Crufts and both he and his vet friend said that my old dog had a strange smell and they weren't happy about it.  Unfortunately she died soon after and she didn't show any signs of being ill.

Don't want to scare you but a visit to the vet may be a good option.

Curry and Hamsters??? How strange.....

Has anyone said anything else other than thyroid?

My Old Lab used to have thyroid problems and he always had a funny smell about him, I never really put the 2 together always put it down to old age

what did their dog have?how long did it smell for?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 23.12.05 17:30 UTC
The dog that I had the vet and her original breeder from Spain thought that she had some kind of cancer.  As I say she died soon after although was fit in most ways for a 12 year old.

Just smelt a bit odd, not a real awful doggy smell or anything like that and as I say she looked healthy enough and was eating normally.

Same happened with my boy who died age 8.  He was eating and living normally but had a really weird smell.  I felt I had to bath him a lot but the smell came back after an hour or so.  It was like a very strong dog odour but smelled somehow meaty as well.  He was only ill for a few days before he died of cancer of the spleen when the growth ruptured he had had the smell for weeks before this happened.

I hope your dog is okay, sometimes a funny smell is just worms or an stomach problem or even bad teeth.  Good luck at the vets.

Echo yours does sound the same scenario as mine.  My girl was 12 and I suppose I allowed for a bit of a doggy smell but others felt that it was more than that.  We didn't have a PM but I'm sure that it was cancer as a once very happy dog deteriorated in a few days.
