my dog is generally quite fussy but since being pregnant has become ten times as fussy.now she will not eat anything.
Have tried fish, chicken, liver, mince beef, turkey mince, scrambled egg, cheese, milk you name it we have tried it.The only thing she wants to eat is chocolate and this makes her sick.
The vet recommended feeding her with lactol but we have to give her that with a syringe because she won't drink it.
Any ideas what to try next

Just as an aside, chocolate is poisonous to dogs
- By vicpickles Date 21.12.05 20:38 UTC
I know thats why that one is not an option

How do you feed her?   If I was you with teh chicken or whatever, I'd get down on the floor and put my hand out, eventually they will take it.

There's always the tube as well which is a food supplement, unfortunately my brain has gone dead, yet again but it's .......vite, I'm srure that someone will give you the correct name.

how far along is she

is raw meat you are trying to feed her or cooked

when id have that trouble with any of the girls i had previously bred i would take them out to the toilet right before i offered food because their tummies where just so crowded they didnt want anything

is she picking at anything at all or is she completely not eating

if she is just picking and she is close to her due date then try things like chicken broth just to give her a little energy enough to get thru labour if she is really close then it is more important that she eat properly after it is very common for bitches to just pick and nibble on things the further they get it always stresses me out to but a dog will never starve itself and if she was very hungry she would eat as longs as she is getting something wether it be small or large amount that is the important thing if you are really concerned or she still has a while left take her to the vets and they will put her on a supplement to add to her water or something you can make into a sloppy type of porrage

Perrodeagua(phew! Thats a hard name to spell),are you thinking of enervite? It comes in a tube and is supposed to stimulate appetite's,it is also chock full of vitamins/minerals. Vicpickles you can pick it up at most pet shops.

Hi

Looking at your last post she is due around Christmas isn't she.  Has she just gone off her food or has she been picky all along.  Is she underweight at all especially with the birth immanent.

Is it at all possible that the dates are slightly off and she is due now as her loss of appetite could be the precursor to whelping.  Can you give us a little more information so that the more experienced breeders can help you.

Hi her day 60 is dec30 she has been picky right from start of pregnancy before that she used to eat various types of dried complete dog foods these I had to vary because she would get fed up with a certain make and I would switch to a different one then back again, this worked for her up until she was pregnant. while pregnant she won't touch any dog food dried or canned i have been feeding her cooked meats, fish, chicken, raw veg etc.
Now she won't touch it  I have also tried offering her raw meat, anything I can think of  even tried hand feeding her just spits everything out.
Vet checked her over but seems fine suggested lactol.

Hi she just eaten some crusts from my hubbys pizza hope this means her appetite is picking up .
Vet says if she like this after the birth we will have to feed the pups ourselves.

Has your vet ever been pregnant? When you have umpteen offspring pushing your stomach into your chest cavity, and your bowels towards your bum, eating is very uncomfortable!
- By vicpickles Date 21.12.05 23:34 UTC
Hi I doubt my vet has ever been pregnant as he is male.

just so you know in the future pizza is not the best for dogs if it is all she will eat make sure the crust has no sauce or anything on it onion is usually in the sauce or onion salt and is not good for dogs but im glad she ate something

is she expecting a large litter and as someone lese posted is she under weight

and jeangenie why would it matter if the vet had ever been pregnant my vet would have told me the exact same

i just noticed somthing in your post is it possible that she only wants what is on your plates cause you said she wouldnt eat it if you handed it to her but she did eat something of your husbands plate what you could try is putting some of her food onto your plate make her think you are eating it and then hand her some because if thats the case i think you just have a very picky girl i know it sounds a little silly but its worth a shot i think anything would be worth a shot i think you will find aftert she has whelped she will want to eat anything and everything in sight they get very very hungry when feeding

That's probably why he doesn't understand what being hugely pregnant feels like, how uncomfortable you are and how, when your stomach's being compressed you don't feel very hungry. Your bitch will probably be happier with tiny portions of quite liquid food as that'll be more easily digested. When she's more comfortable inside (two or three days after whelping) I'm sure her appetite will improve.

Hi, I was just reading your post and wondering how you were getting on?  Hopefully she has got her appetite back and all is well, but if she hasn't then you could try what my husband and I did.  Our bitch sounds just like yours and her diet went drastically down hill when she was in whelp just like your bitch.  She wouldn't touch dog food of any kind so we began cooking various meats but to still no real avail.  In the end we got her down to her basic instincts....... we would throw a piece of meat on the floor and get down on our hands and knees to go for it like a pack of dogs.  This got her reacting instinctively and in this way we got her to eat some food ( we looked b****y silly though!:-(  ).  The reason I'm writing this post is because of what happened next to our bitch....... she had four healthy pups which at 3 weeks old were literally sucking her dry and with us still battling to feed her she unfortunately developed eclampsia.  She survived it and we went on to feed her pups for her so it all turned out well in the end, but please make sure you know the symptons especially as her intake of calcium has probably been compromised.  All the best
