I noticed worms in our 4 month old puppy last month and the vet gave us some tablets. She seemed fine after that but I have just given her the 2nd tablet which was to be taken 3 weeks after the first. and there are still live worms in the poo which were not coming out till she had the tablet. The worms are really long about 5inches. Do you think the tablets aren't strong enough.

Dogs can be reinfected with worms the day after being wormed, hence why you do not worm once for life or even a year.......

I think id take her to the vets - ive never known worms of 5 inches - its concerning me and shes not my dog!

What are you worming the pup with? Only Drontal + seems to kill all known worms!

How many times had the pup been wormed before you got her, btw? Only I wouldn't expect a properly wormed 4 month old to be riddled with 'em.

My breeder freinds and I ahve noticed that worm burdens in pups whose Mums ahve been well wormed when themselves puppies have much fewer worms.

All my bitches have now for five generations been wormed regularly as pups (monthly to six months and then every three months) and whilst in whelp.

I have never ever seen adult worms in any of the pups faeces.

On the other hand my freidn rescued a litter of 6 week old GSD's that had swollen bellies, staring coats and no appetite.  they were wormed and they were throwing up and pooing worms in huge numbers.

They were extremely anaemic from the worm burden, and one very nearly died.  It was amazing to see these pups two weeks later after their direhoea had cleared up, and their appetites woken up with a vengeance. :D

hi, I was given milbamax(think this is how you spell it I have got rid of packet)by the vet, but I think I will go back to the vets and get her checked, its pretty horrifying to see these big worms coming out such a little pup.

We picked up a beagle type pup, years and years ago, I must have been about 9 or 10? My Mum wormed the poor thing, he had a really swollen belly, then popped to the shops leaving the pup in the kitchen...well you have never ever seen anyting like it!!! There were piles of worms everywhere and even some still sticking in his bottom! YUK...we being kids couldn't pull them out or anything, we were just horrified and traumatized!! LOL:eek: So we all stood around howling till mum came back! What a sight greeted her, 3 screaming kids and one yelping pup! That sight will never leave me!

Onto tape worms...even though I worm my cats every 3 months, sometimes they throw up a large tape worm, at leact 10 inches long! The last one was last week and I had wormed them with Drontal from the Vets! I got some Drontal XL from hyperdrug and did them again the next day!

What a lovely subject huh?

worms can be very long i think it looks like spaghetti sticks when you have a pregnant bitch just about all worming products have to be taken every 3 weeks and when pups are born they say to give it every 2 until 8 weeks and then again at 12 weeks sometimes not all worms can be killed or flushed out by the worming stuff and thats why with a badly infected dog or pregnant bitch or pup they need to be wormed so often to clear them out

i dont know if you have it there yet or if you even need it but in aus we have to worm against heartworm with a tablet everyday because the mozzy's here are bad and it is carried by mozzy's but recently they have brought over here a yearly vaccination against it i havent used it yet cause im not sure if it is as good as the tablet given everyday and heart worm can kill so i wouldnt want to be using something that i dont know works better then the tablets have any of you used it

I think we are very very lucky being spared heartworm in the UK.  Is there good compliance with preventative treatment in Australia?   I can just imagine how many of our less responsible owners would trouble themselves over a tablet every day not to mention the expense :(

the tablet isnt expensive really just a couple of dollars a day its more trying to pry my girls jaws open and shoving the tablet in her throat about 20 times cause she keeps spitting it out that is the trouble but its worth it because the heartbreak of loosing my girl would be harder and the cost of the vet to cure any heartworm probs is alot more and most of the time the symptoms dont show up until the latre stages and by then it is usually too late or the treatment itself could kill the dog
