Just lately my ankles are swelling up like puddings, they are not painful, and Doctors and I are not a match made in heaven. So if anyone can shed any light on why this may be happening I'd be so grateful. :D

water retention?
- By liberty Date 17.12.05 00:30 UTC
Thanks, I thought of that too.....but what causes it??  I look like I got camel legs.........no skirts for me over crimbo :(

Water retention can be hormonal - time of the month or, if relevant, menopausal. But if they are as bad as you describe then I'd take them to the doctor because there are other conditions that can cause swollen limbs.

I was a dancer and a figure skater in my younger years and i get ligament problems that makes my ankles and knees swell up periodically. Its very painful and i get a course of anti inflamitary drugs to take.It cant be cured but its less painful with the medicatio.Take the plunge and go see the doc,its not all that bad.At least then it may be skirts for cristmas. :)

It could be an indication of a number of things.  I know what you mean about doctors.  One doctor I saw regularly was witholding information about a drug that would help combat my migraines.  Five years I was suffering before a pharmacist informed me about them. After that each time I needed to see a doctor I would ask to see a different one inthe practice until I found the one that I trusted and who I can converse with rather than being treated like an idiot.  You really should see your doctor or speak to a pharmacist and get their opinion, many of them are really helpful

Libs get to the Docs and get it checked out :)

If it is as bad as you say and it hasn't happened before it needs looking at ;)

Let us know how you get on

Have a read here, it is interesting.  I suffer from swollen ankles in the summer, but I put that down to excess weight! :D

Agree with Scroogie, best to go to the doctors if you have never suffered before.

Good luck, I know how uncomfotable it can be.

I think i read somewhere it could be due to high blood pressure.

Thanks all, for your replies, I have a Doctors appointment for friday and will mention it then, thing is Doctors never seem to take me seriously:rolleyes:  (and its not because am always at the surgery moaning) Someone else told me it as a symptom of Congestive Heart Failure.........jeeez cheered me up no end:eek: lol

Want me to come with you to your appoinment with you libs, I can use my usual patient doctor technique on him ;)

Please do go to the doctor I had this along with chest pain and shortness of breath and I put off going to the docs.  Turned out unfortunately that it was heart failure which needed to be treated right away.  So don't delay.  However, if you have no other symptoms it most likely isn't this but you need to rule it out.

Even if it is not the best news, once treated you can live a virtually normal life :)  I can still walk my dog little and often :)

Hmmm.. Preggie:eek: That's the only time my ankles have ever swollen. but then again, not till 8 months onwards. Think maybe you may of noticed your belly swelling before then though!
But apart from water retention, more seriously is diabities. But you will have many other symptoms also.

Sorry I was thinking of the heart problem Ive had 2 relatives that have had swollen ankles and feet due to this they both went on ferusamide (??sp).  But like others have mentioned it can be loads of things. Dont let your Doctor fob you off tho, I have a healthy distrust of GPs.
- By CherylS Date 20.12.05 13:32 UTC
Don't let the doctor try and rush you.  They are busy, we all know that but a consultation isn't supposed to be one sided as in many situations.  Ask the questions you need to ask, explain your concerns and stress how much it is worrying you if it is worrying you.  Don't be fobbed off with "if it isn't better by .....come back and see me" without getting their opinion on what they think it could be.

Re my post above, when I went to the doctors to ask for the medication that would help my migraines the doctor refused saying that my migraines weren't bad enough  Hello?..... 3 days laid up every couple of weeks, 3 young children, house to run, part time job blah blah blah, what is bad then?  I kept asking questions until she admitted that the medication was expensive and that was it!!!!  I pushed my bum further back into the seat and crossed my legs making it quite clear that I was going nowhere and I got the medication and haven't looked back since.  This isn't the best type of relationship though, that is obvious.  The doctor I have now listens and asks questions and answers any questions I have fully without making me feel silly, inferior or that I am wasting her time.  Not all doctors are the same, you just need to find one that suits you.

WOW, I hadn't realised how bad some GP's were! I have a lot of problems, just had 2 hips replaced and am Diabetic and high BP etc etc etc! You know how it goes?! But my GP Practise is a Christian one(as am I) and since I joined them I have had excellent care and their ethos is certainly a lot different to the care I DIDN'T receive from my old GP in Scotty Land!

The swollen legs by the way...can be anything on earth! Usually caused by high blood pressure or varicose veins etc. There are lots of other causes such as intermittant claudication and a wonder of other things but really it isn't worth speculating without an examination!

I do have swollen legs, but it's caused by my high BP and lack of mobility from my Arthritis.

Go and BE FIRM about your problems, write a list of questions you have and don't be fobbed off, all the best, Dawn X:cool:
