If only the bitches read the books too

My girl was used to sleeping on our bed with us and even though a whelping box was set up for her in our bedroom she showed no interest in it until she was literally minutes from her waters breaking ;)  She ran back and forth from the box about four times and was agitated and after a low howl her waters broke - within 2 hours of that the whole litter was born, dried off and suckling happily with mum.  Textbook delivery from her thank God.

Don't let her out of your sight - she may ask out to relieve herself frequently - keep her on lead in case she wants to disappear into bushes, shrubs etc and whelps a pup somewhere that you either don't see happening or can't readily reach.   Stay in the room with the whelping box but don't force her to use it - she will when she's good and ready provided you have made it as safe, dark, cosy and private as possible for her.   Keep reassuring her in gentle tones - it sounds imminent - fingers crossed all goes smoothly for you both but have your vet's emergency number on redial and if you have a breeder/mentor helping you keep their number on redial on your mobile - better safe than sorry!

HTH, good luck Teri :)

Hi again Sophie :)

If her due date is still almost 11 days away she is probably just experiencing discomfort if the pups are moving around a lot - have you seen or felt any movement today from them?   Have they obviously dropped down lower into her under carriage?  What colour was the discharge?

Is it possible you or your vet miscalculated the original dates?  Best stick close to her anyway and if she's still distressed in the morning then I'd have a word with the vet in case something is amiss.

Best wishes, Teri :)

hi terry it was quiet night nothing happened but she did go into her whelping box for the night, the discharge was clear and it looks like the pups have moved down as it looks bigger under neath her belly now,i spoke to my vets and she seems to think that pups are moving down getting ready like u said she also reassured me that shes fine and to call her if anything changes.thank you for your advice

my girl discharged for 7 days before she whelped and she also whelped on the 59th day and i didnt miscount she just went early it was probably due to the fact that she had a large litter just keep an eye on her i always tell when i girl is going to whelp within 24 hours by the drop when they belly apears to have dropped down overnight i also do the temp so those two combined are what tells me i shouldnt be sleeping until she has whelped all pups

my girl whelped on day 59, first sign was on day 58 at 9pm she started panting and didnt stop for about 5 days. Once she starts to pant i would consider her in labour.

Just to avoid confusion.

In whelp = Pregnant

Whelping = Giving Birth

Or
About to whelp, due to whelp etc means ,means about to have or due to give birth to puppies.

The thread title looks like wanting pregnancy confirmed. :D :) :D

Just wondered if you knew when the bitch was mated (planned pregnancy) or you have found yourself with a bitch in whelp.

If the latter the Vet may only be guessing at the stage of pregnancy so I would play things by ear from now on.
- By sophie23_98 [im] Date 20.12.05 22:23 UTC
no i know the date of the mating 29th oct but the vet told me that it could start a week b4 or a week later i just noticed a few changes in her thats all.will keep people updated
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.12.05 00:30 UTC
The main reason for that is that a bitch may not actually conceive for several days after mating, larger litters tend to come earlier too.

yes thats tru my girl had nine and delivered on the 59th day
