Can anyone help.  I have a three week old puppy who is straining and appears to be constipated. Due to the puppies mummy getting decidely uninterested I have been offering them for the last 3 days a puppy porridge twice a day - consisting of a milk substitute with puppy food done in the blender. The pups have happily lapped today with only a little resistance from one or two of them.  I noticed the constipated puppy straining to poo and walking around the whelping box moaning/crying, She was straining while sleeping too, but not all the time, presently she is sleeping and hasnt strained once.
I have syringed her water to try to get some fluids into her to hopefully help her. Has anyone got any other suggestions that I could try .

Thanks Regards

Hi Mabs,
I know you could give her some syrup of figs (Califig).I am unsure of the dose but if you use the search option and put in constipated puppies it will tell you as there is more information.
Goodluck!

A little liquid parafin works too.

Hi Mabs,

I've just been through this myself with 3 week old pups I am having to feed myself and weaning early.  Just a quick question before I go into what I did... if the mother has lost interest have you been stimulating them to urinate and defecate?  Anyway two of my pups became constipated despite being stimulated before eating, with the change of diet so I used a tiny syringe to administer a very small quantity (about the volume of a small pea / but I guess it depends on the size of your breed - mine are toys), of virgin olive oil into their rectum.  You must make sure the end of the syringe is very small, not sharp and well lubed and then very gently syringe in the oil.  It worked a treat for us!  Hope they're going soon!

with a young pup puppy porridge does tend to constipate try just some moistened down puppy biscuits my pups have been on it from around 2 and a half weeks old and i havent had constipation issues but also try to stimulate the pup as mabs said usually by now they would be doing it by themselves but some pups do need some encourgemant

perhaps mum is fed up of cleaning them,
if i see a pup that is straining, i get a warm damp,
cotton wool ball and wipe thier Bottom.
it makes them poo.
but if it's not that take pup to vet.
hope its all ok for you.

when our staffie baby was constipated we tried a mix of weetabix, well mashed with substitute puppy milk, and massaged her belly with a warm cloth or hot water bottle. try not too bulk  up with more food. also used  an already suggested method with olive oil. good luck
