Hello, please can you explain about the barf diet,. I have been reading the threads and am interested to find out more. I have 2 whippets who are 5 months old. What quantity would they need and what is fed.? they are fed 3 times a day at the moment. Thanks in advance.

the usual diet is raw chicken (necks, wings, carcass whatever) you can feed as it comes or chop it or even mince it.raw vegetables mushed in the processor to a pulp as this is the way a dog absorbs them best and a little raw organ meat.the quantities should be 70% chicken and bone,20% vegetables and 10% organ meat (i like to use heart 3 days and liver 1 day).a dog should get between 15 and 20 % of its bodyweight per week of chicken ie a 20lb dog would get 3 to 4 lbs of chicken per week and work the veggie amount and organ amounts out from there.add a decent vitamin supplement and thats about it you can add things like raw egg, sardines ,cottage cheese etc as and when you fancy..

Hi Guest
I've been Barfing my dogs for four years now. I own Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies and a lurcher.
I started as my first Mal didn't seem to be growing as well as I hoped and I was a little worried. I startd talking to another Mally friend and she lent me the book Give Your Dog a bone by Dr Ian Billinghurst. I read the book thought I'd give it a try and haven't looked back since.
A couple of years later we were approached by a Malamute breeder who really liked our boy and after careful thought he then went out to stud. The bitch was also fed on a natural diet and she produced a wonder litter of ten pups who were all weaned on the BARF diet. The were absolutely adorable and have proved themselves as excellent working and show dogs.
It's really worth getting hold of the book as it's a brilliant reference. he has also done another book called Grow your pups with bones. I know they are available form Canine Natural Cures.
The books will give you an idea of food types, quantities but basically the advice you've already been given is correct.
I'm more than sure Ian Billnghurst has a website but not sure of the web address so will have to get back to you on that one.
I wish you every success.
