what advice could you give me on travelling with a pregnant dog she is due in 2wks.It's only an hour each way but don't want to do anything to upset her.

i think you could possibly upset her a little as she gets closer and once she is to close she may not be interested to whelp in her whelping box or may be very nervous are you talking about a xmas thing are you supposed to spend xmas with relo's

i would try not to but if it is a must that you travel then i wouldnt have her out for to long

Does she like travelling in the car ?
is the place you are taking her familiar?
I have one that loves the car.
the other hates it.
do you think it would stress her out,
you know her best.

she dosen't like travelling too much and sometimes gets sick, it's 1 hr drive each way. She is familar with my sisters but never stayed over night before. As we are keeping it a quiet christmas at home for her, my sister wants to have an early christmas for us at the weekend.

I am trying to weigh up which would be the least stressing for her either travelling with us or staying behind with someone to look after her which she hates.
or upset my sister and all stay home.

it sounds like you have to go so if its for one night she may be ok just make sure when you all get back she has a very relaxed quiet surroundings

Just to add one more thing to take into consideration; Apart from upsetting the bitch, the journey by car could, if you are unlucky, physically hurt both her and the pups. There is always the risk of having to brake hard to avoid an accident, or  beeing hit by another car from behind at a traffic-light. You don't say anything about the breed, a smaller breed should be safer travelling in a smaller cage, than a larger breed. Still, if you are unlucky, something which would normally be "nothing" could jeopardize something which I suppose you have been planning for and looking forward to, for a long time.
Personally, when I mate a bitch, that's my first priority. Anything else comes second, apart from matters of life and death.
Naturally you don't want to upset your sister. Maybe if you explain your worries to her, she will easier understand, if you decide not to go? :-)
Anyway, good luck with everything, I'm sure it will work out fine. :-p

that thought had never entered my mind but she does make a very good point it is definetly something to consider the only time a take a pregnant bitch in the car is to take her to the vet which is less then 5 mins down the road if you still do go buy a   harness it works as a dog seat belt its what i use in my car when i have to take my bitch in the car pregnant or not and if she is small enough for a cage make sure you buckle the cage in securely because the cage could fly of the seat

You know your girl best so only you can really decide whether or not to go or stay home.  I remember when we were expecting our first litter, I had to go on a long drive 2 1/2 weeks before & I had to weigh up whether my girl would prefer to spend 9-10 hours at home (mine never get left) or come with me on the drive.  As she's a good traveller & doesn't mind the car & by then she was my constant shadow I took her with me & had absolutely no problems at all, in fact she thought the stops at services & especially our final destination were brill & it was just one big adventure for her :D

Personally I feel the more stressed you get the more it will upset your girl & if you think that she'll be much happier with you than home with a sitter then take her with you.

I think the world's gone mad.  Surely a pregnant dog can travel an hour in a car??  She is pregnant, not made of glass!
- By Harmony Date 16.12.05 10:39 UTC
 lol    Well the very same had crossed my mind but I was trying to be diplomatic ~ lol!!
- By slee [au] Date 16.12.05 11:17 UTC
yes she isnt made of glass but she is very close and some bitches can get very nervy with change and that can affect the whelp that is why she was asking a week before my bitches whelp i wont take her anywhere not even the vets unless there is reason to because change a sorroundings can be very upsetting to a bitch approaching whelp
- By Harmony Date 16.12.05 11:51 UTC
With a week to go I would agree in not upsetting their routine but with 2 weeks to go she should be fine especially as she'd most likely prefer to be close by her Mum than home with a sitter.

I know how easy it is to worry about our dog's but I do sometimes think that we can worry for no reason & that in turn can be worse for the bitch as she'll pick up on our stress.

Only the OP can make a decision on what is best, she knows her bitch better than anyone.  I personally, with 2 weeks to go would just take her with me but then it's not my decision to make :)

If she's only got 2 weeks to go and she is often sick when travelling by car I think the OP is right to be concerned, not over-protective at all. Can someone travel in the back with her to help sooth her? I would think she would probably be ok with an hour's journey if she's allowed plenty of time to herself to relax afterwards, but I'm no expert! :-)
