Topic Dog Boards / General / clipping your schauzer

Hi,

can anyone tell me what the best clippers are for trimming a miniture schnauzer. I've got away with using beard trimmers but as she's alot bigger now i presume there are stronger clippers capable of coping with my dogs thick hair. If anyone has purchased some for a good price  and can let me know that would be great.

thanks Bear

They have a hard coat as you know so I owuld not buy any of the cheaper pet brands.

I would say about £100-£110  pair will do the job OK and probably need a couple of blades.  Can only go with the ones I have used myself on both Schnauzer and westie. Laube, oster and Mosermax.   <a class='url' href='http://www.clipperservices.co.uk/acatalog/Trimmers.html'>http://www.clipperservices.co.uk/acatalog/Trimmers.html</a>are good with their pricing cheaper than most.

You may well know this so tell me to shut up ;-) but remember to use a blade 10 or higher for the ears and face so you don't pinch or cut the dog.

Thanks for reply.   Well my husband nearly fell off the chair when I told him the prices ;)

Any advice is welcome as I have no knowledge of what blades etc should be used.

on my own dogs i use a 10 or 7f on the head, neck and bottom and a 15 on the ears. Each blade is about 20 pounds so you could get away with just buying a 10 and if you buy the Osters a 10 usualy comes with the clippers. will your dog be hand stripped? If not i would use a 7f on the body and a 10 on the other areas.

Great stuff :).  Can I just double check you use it on a Schnauzer, as I've nearly broken a £40 normal hair clipper trying to get through that hair ;)  Tx Claire

The cheap ones are not suitable for the schnauzer coat..they may cut a couple of times but they won't last like the professional ones. In my opinion of course.

If you learn to strip the coat it will be easier to care for in the long run (and cheaper :D ) ;)  It will also be more waterproof ;)  It's easy to learn to hand strip, perhaps if you contact the breeder or one of the Mini Schnauzer clubs they could put you in touch with someone who could teach you :)

Sory Radleydog hope I didn't offend , didn't mean to honestly :-)..  in professional terms £35 would be very cheap.  £100 is about the cheapest in professional types and for terrier, Schnauzer coats you really need the professional ones.  Bare in mind £100 is only 4-5 trims from a professional groomer so after this you would be saving money.

I would always recommend learning to strip if you are prepared to but with the Schnauzer I am not sure how you would get the head quite right without clipping some if it. The back , legs and some of the head could be stripped easily but you have to do it regular .

If you were prepared to strip the body coats, then you could get away with using an Oster Mark ll clippers for the head, ears and neck etc.  They have detatchable blades (4 sizes) and a 2 year warranty.  Very well priced, sturdy and will last for a long time as the blades can be resharpened and they don't run as hot as the professional Oster machines ;)  I used a pair of these (second hand) while saving up for my professional clippers and still use them for a quick trim on the beddies ears/throats before a show :)

Hi, I have now used the argos one's on my mini 6 or 7 times and they still cope well with it. A good site to look at for mini owners who wish to learn how to hand stripe ot clip is http;//msbritmor/groom.html. Viv

Bought a pair & although they coped reasonably well the cutting guides kept slipping off leaving a few bald patches  ;).  Managed to secure some Oster A5 Gold with #10 blade for £40 on EBAY, so the others will be going back to Argos.

Thanks for all your help everyone.
