The pups are four weeks old on Monday, today one of my husbands friends, wife & Children came to visit us. My girl went mad hair up, barking, growling, scared the life out of everyone. I am not saying that I have never heard her bark because she will let you know if there is something she does not like. But I have never seen her like this. This then started my other lab off what am I going to do when people come to see the pups, I know she is not like this normally but god only knows what they are going to think. I am really worried about this, have any of you had similiar experiences & any advice on how to deal with this. Thankyou.

Was shee just like this when they went into where te pups were or the fact that they had come to the house at all?

How has she ben with normal callers to the house?  It could be that that many people were just too much for her to cope with and she felt her pups were at risk.

I would suggest you get people she knows to visit one at a time and see how it goes,a dn sugest when the potential pupy owners come she is given plenty of t8em to meet them before they go anywhere near her pups.

It started the minute they came into the house, with people who visit us regular she has been no trouble at all. Quite happy to let them see the pups, pick them up etc. I have a teenage son who's mates are in & out all the time, she does not batter an eyelid.

I don't want this to sound like I am trying to drug my girl, but is it possible to get dog calmers like humans can get. I am so worried having the pups has changed her temperament. Dont get me wrong I want the pups to go to the best loving homes possible, but she is my baby & I dont want her to suffer, as today was definiately not good for her.

Don't wish to worry you but Slee had a similar experience to yours - a normally placid dog who bit a child who went near pups......turned out her girl had eclampsia. Keep your eye on her and search the thread on symptoms.

yep she showed no signs until i was uncomfortable with her behavour the next day and decided to get her to the vets and i was right to because left up to another 12- 24 hours it would have resulted in death or coma her levels where so low
just one thing though her temprement may go back to normal sometimes mortherhood and whelp does change a dog but usually why they have the pups and what you think isnt normal for your dog actually is when she is protecting her babies the thing with dogs are there only natural protection is warning growls and if they dont work a bite but sometimes they feel the situation just warrants an immediate bite especially as her pups would be up and around by now and she cant keep them rounded up into a small group anymore and she may have felt they where to close to the room in which her pups were in or it could have been the smell of them if they have a dog the smell of the other dog on them scared her she may have thought they had there dog with them it sounds like normal protective behavour to me with my girl there where no warnings she was lying there one minute the child stood up and she thought the child was going to walk away with it and bit she wasnt feeling well and didnt want to have to follow the child with the pup so she just bit and if you saw how my girl carry's on you would think she didnt have a biting bown in her body but if the dog feels the situation warrants it it will bite they all have teeth and the ability to bite so never underestimate your dog it can bite as for fixing it i wouldnt stop what is coming naturally to her i would just try not to have people at your home until the pups have new homes or she is at a point where she doesnt want to be with her pups as much because then she isnt gonna feel the need to protect

Thankyou slee, in a funny sort of way you have put my mind at rest. I quess it was just the shock of her reaction.

When we picked up our last pup, the breeder had both the sire and dam, and she put them both in another room at the other end of the house while we were there.  If you can't do this, what about putting her in the car?
