Topic Dog Boards / General / Vacuum Cleaners. Which One?
- By bevb [gb] Date 08.12.05 20:15 UTC
A few months ago I bought a Henry hoover but have found it absolutly crap at picking up dog hairs and it does not get up to the edges.
Milo sheds little white short hairs that stick in the carpet and henry doesn't budge them. Soon Shady will probaly be shedding her black ones too.
I have been looking at the Vax upright ones are they any good or can someone reccomend a really good one that actually picks up dog hairs and gets into the edges with minimum effort.
I know the Miele dog and cat is excellent but a bit out of my price range at the moment.

I take it you are using henry on carpets ???
If so have you tried the turbo head for henry ?
Alot will depend on they type of carpets that you have, could you give more information ?
As for getting in to the edges of areas the only way i have ever truly got into the edges with any hoover no matter how good it is, is to use just the hose without a head attatched.

Yes it is on old carpets which have seen better days.  But with 2 dogs ages 10 months and 5 months I don't want to be spending out on new carpets yet, till they are out of the Kevin stages.
Many cleaners get very close to the edges but henry is miles away and the head is so difficult to get off.

Hi,

I recently got myself an animal dyson and I think it's great, very good at getting all dust and hairs.

is the henry turbo head worth getting?
- By woo19771 [gb] Date 08.12.05 20:41 UTC
I've got the Miele Cat and Dog and must say it is superb. PM me if you want to know where I got it from - online is v good (around £168)

Plus you get a two year warranty with it so is well worth it.  I've a golden retriever and a whippet x - picks up the goldens hairs really really well.  even if i have been lazy and not vacuumed for a few days and the carpet is thick with them.

Best thing I have ever purchased - I am a man and I am excited about a hoover!!!! :D :D

>Best thing I have ever purchased - I am a man and I am excited about a hoover!!!!

Know what you mean woo! :) That's why I bought my OH a Dyson a few years back. He treated it like a bit of high tech machinery and promptly took total charge of all hoovering! When the first Dyson gave up the ghost under the weight of cocker spaniel sheddings we got the Animal Dyson which has performed a treat.
- By Goldmali Date 08.12.05 23:10 UTC
My Animal Dyson had to be repaired 3 times in the first year and gave up the ghost entirely as soon as the 2 year guarantee ran out. And it never picked up, not even in the rooms without animals....... It honestly was the worst I've ever had.
- By Lindsay Date 08.12.05 23:50 UTC
It's weird that peeps have such different experiences of dysons - we have a DC04 upright, my sister has the animal, and they do fine :)
But what i have heard is putting me off getting  another one now :( - I want a cylinder one and am not sure what to buy. #

There seems to be so much on the market these days - tooo much choice, too hard to decide!!

Also bought a Dyson animal (Not the upright one) and thought it was crap, maybe alright on hard floors but no good on carpets, I emailed them complaining and the next day someone came round from Dyson, I must admit I was impressed, but the guy even admitted that the upright ones are far better for carpets as some of the suction is lossed on the cylinder ones turning the brushes whereas with the upright ones the brushes are turned by a motor.  I have gone back to Hoover one called the Pet, brilliant. and half the price
- By carene [in] Date 09.12.05 08:22 UTC
we've got the Electrolux vitesse for pet lovers - brilliant for picking up pet hairs - BUT- the filter's a nightmare to clean - so I've reclaimed my old Henry (from my daughter's) and now use Henry to clean the Electrolux filter - ! - and all is well.....I did notice yesterday that Electrolux have now brought out a new model with self cleaning filter, so I bet they've had loads of complaints...:-(
- By dippydog [gb] Date 09.12.05 08:26 UTC
We have the Dyson Animal and it's fantastic, but before that we had a Sebo upright which was just as good. The only reason we changed was the Dyson got smelly due to age, it's over 4 years old and the idea of not buying bags every few months was a key thing for choosing the Dyson. The Sebo still works perfectly but it smells doggy when you use it. Have tried cleaning all of it with different cleaners but smell remains. Does anyone know of something that could get rid of the odours?
- By dippydog [gb] Date 09.12.05 08:28 UTC
Sorry just got up, Dyson not smelly, well not yet anyway. Just the old Sebo that's smelly.
- By Lindsay Date 09.12.05 08:46 UTC
Kizzy, is the Pet bagless?

I don't think I could bear to empty bags again.

My best ever vacuum was my old Vax - with a brand new bag.
Suction was totally amazing, second to none - BUT, once I had done one round of vacuuming, it basically needed a new bag! :( amazing suction was reduced by about 80 per cent.

Got way to expensive to keep the house clean, unfortunately.

If a company invented a vacuum with that much suction, and cleaning power, but no bag, I'd be straight in there :D

we also have a dyson, it is very good at picking up the dog hairs but the only problem which has been stated by others is the doggy smell it gives off after you have had it for a few years
- By Kate B [gb] Date 09.12.05 12:25 UTC
Dyson Animal DC07 -  brilliant at picking up dog and cat hairs.  And when I see the amount it picks up, I'm really pleased when I have to empty it after every going-over!
- By Schiplab [gb] Date 09.12.05 13:43 UTC
How much do these go for Dyson Animal DC07?

I need to replace my old Dyson and the above model sounds just what I am looking for.
- By karenclynes [gb] Date 09.12.05 14:19 UTC
Hi,

You can get a much better deal online than in the shops - I think I got mine for about £230 but that was the newer model DC14.

I've got a Henry and I was going to replace it recently as I didn't think much of it for picking up dog hairs.  As a last resort before shelling out for a dyson or similar, I bought a universal turbo head from Argos, about £25.    Whilst not perhaps as good as a Dyson, it certainly improves Henry for collecting dog hairs.  It might be worth a try for £25.

I have a black, and a yellow lab who both shed hair for England by the way, and since using the turbo my carpets look a whole lot better.

Go to your local library and go to the Reference Dept, there you will find the Which? magazines, the index will tell you which edition the original/updates of particular appliances have been reviewed.  They have tables of which is the most efficient and reliable in 2 or 3 price categories.

Then you get an informed opinion based on scientific research.

One of the reasons I got my Miele was on the back of this, and I have not regretted it, it is superb for dog hairs, is quiet, and it comes with a filter as well as bags; cylinder and very light.
- By earl [gb] Date 09.12.05 14:32 UTC
We have a Dyson Animal too.  Does anyone else find that it cuts out all the time?  We then have to take it apart and wash out all the filters before it starts working again.  We only live in a small bungalow and it seems to cut out every second time we use it.
- By bevb [in] Date 09.12.05 14:36 UTC
I have just been looking at the Hoover pets dust manager does anyone know if its any good,

Bev
- By Bubbles17 [gb] Date 09.12.05 15:55 UTC
we have Dyson Animal(upright), its been great, picks up dog. cat and plenty of human hairs (i think my daughters shed more hair than the dog or cat) i have no smells from it and it never cuts out, i have only washed the filters once in 3 years. When this breaks i will get another one.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 09.12.05 17:56 UTC
I have no problems with my Dyson Animal either :D

Daisy
- By earl [gb] Date 10.12.05 18:11 UTC
Hmmm, seems that I'm the only one who has a problem with it.  We don't even have a dog that sheds.  I probably lose more hair than she does.
- By Lindsay Date 09.12.05 15:53 UTC
Tohme, how often do you have to fit new bags, do you find once the bag gets full it takes away suction?

Are the bags expensive?

just wondering if the whole "bag" thing has improved over the years as last time I used one was about 8 years ago :P

Hmm, probably not a good idea to ask me about frequency of changing bags as I am not known for my qualities as a domestic goddess! :D

HAving two hairy dogs however FORCES me to use it regularly but I seem to go months before It needs changing; never known suction to be reduced (unless I have accidentally hoovered up something that may block the hose/hole; easy to do with the powerful suction).

Sets of bags (5) plus a filter cost £8.00.

When full, the indicator goes red, you just open up, slide closure across and dump in bin.
- By Lindsay Date 13.12.05 13:08 UTC
Well it seems as if bags might be better these days then .... i need to vacuum probably every other day at least in the living room so use my vacuums loads :D but I am in NO way a domestic goddess :P

Is it the Miele Cat and Dog you have out of interest?

I have to watch the allergy thing too.

"Which" reports say that it 's hard to get a vacuum that picks up dust AS WELL as pet hair, AND is OK for allergy sufferers, plus is reliable!! You usually have to pick some of those qualities but not all of them.....

I love my Dyson for pet hair (the purple one) it is fantastic picks up every hair! And great on laminate flooring as well as carpets.  Wouldn't be without it.
- By kizzy68 [gb] Date 10.12.05 12:45 UTC
Hi Lyssa
Must ask, is your Dyson animal an upright one, mine is a cylinder type, (Purple)and as mentioned above absolute rubbish at picking dog hairs up, my GSD sheds her undercoat twice a year and it is a nightmare, so the vacuum has a lot of work to do, it looks ok when you first hoover but on closer inspection you can still the hairs deep in the carpet, upright one is OK.  But I think both are grossly overpriced.
- By Lindsay Date 10.12.05 12:57 UTC
Kizzy, does yours have the turbo brush?  :)

Sorry for long wait for a reply.......... mine is an upright :-)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.12.05 13:12 UTC
Upright every time for the dog hair, never found anyone found the cylinder any good with my breed or goldens.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 10.12.05 17:58 UTC
I have a purple Dyson Animal too (upright), and it's brilliant! :)
- By kizzy68 [gb] Date 11.12.05 09:07 UTC
Hi Lindsay

Yes it does have the turbo brush specifically for animal hairs, but as I said not at all impressed.
- By Lindsay Date 11.12.05 18:00 UTC
OK thanks, I think the uprights are meant to be better, shame as I'd love a cylinder!

Having long haired dogs, I find the turbo brushes on specific animal cleaners are actually more trouble than they're worth as the long hair just winds round them and jams the whole mechanism.

I now have the bog standard Henry, and find it great.  Suction is so strong that my cleaner complains that she can't actually move the darn thing - she can't seem to get the hang of opening the little 'window' that reduces the suction  and as she's my MIL I can't be too rude LOL.

i've got a dyson dc08-one of them cylinder ones. Its brill-but like other posters have said, gives off a doggy smell. I put them smelly things in, but then it just smells of doggy pot pourri! I've tried the dyson animal, but didn't rate it to be honest. Besides, you can get a turbo attachment which is designed for pet hairs for other dysons-its useless though. Well mine is.

I have a Vax cyclonic and it's a really good vacumn cleaner - upright though.   It comes with lots of accessories including a turbo head which I haven't had to use yet as it gets up the hair from 3 Munsters & a cat without ever needing anymore help!   Extra filters & belts along with it too and under £100.
- By Kerioak Date 11.12.05 10:32 UTC
I have a Dyson DC04 which is currently shedding more dust upon the carpet than it is picking up.

It has never been any good on the tile/timber floors at picking anything up other than specks of dust - get a bit of grit or sand, or even a leaf and it throws a tantum spitting it out the back so I tend to sweep the solid floors and (did) just use it on carpets where my long hair got tangled around it and frequently had to be cut out from around the head.

Can anyone recommend a machine that will pick up any size (within reason) item from the floor from dust to leaves to my hair, and do it well on both solid floors and carpets. Clean close to the sides and is also easy to use to clean cobwebs.  If it has bags they must be easy to obtain as I hate going shopping?

Am I asking for the impossible
- By munkeemojo Date 11.12.05 13:23 UTC
there a few members that have a Miele Cat & Dog and they rate it really highly. I'm a dyson fan, but thats only because none of mine have gone wrong-yet.
- By WendyH [gb] Date 11.12.05 15:47 UTC
I have an Oreck - I've had it for years.  It's an upright but brilliant for picking up hairs (I have 3 semi-long-haired cats, an old collie whose hair falls out as she walks, and 2 other dogs).  It's also by far the lightest weight vacuum cleaner available.  I'd never have anything else.  Not cheap, but then what works best often isn't the cheapest.
- By ravens01 [us] Date 12.12.05 06:34 UTC
Hello, I haven't read the rest of the posts so I don't know what else has been recommended, but we have a Dyson Animal vacuum (the purple one) and it works brilliantly.  THe first time you use it, it is almost disgusting how much hair you can't see on the carpet.  We have 2 Shelties, 1 Golden Retriever, 1 German Shepherd, and a Lab, and it works wonderfully, even with that much hair.
