Topic Dog Boards / Health / 2nd Vaccination, 10 or 12 weeks?
- By Boxer Owner [gb] Date 05.12.05 18:57 UTC
Hi all.
I would like to know if anyone knows anything about when a pup can have his vaccinations?
I have a Boxer pup of 9 1/2 weeks. He had his first needle at 8 weeks just before we got him. The needle he had was Vanguard DA2Pi also Vanguard CPV-L.

The breeder I got him from has over 20 years expierance breeding and showing Boxers and said her vet will give him his second needle at 10 weeks old. (She wants me to take him to show ring classes as soon as possible). However my vet (the vet we use for our older Boxer) said they will not give him his second needle until he is 12 weeks old.

Why is it that one will give the needle at 10 weeks and the other will not?

I do trust the lady I got him from and plan to take him to her vets this weekend but don't understand why my vet would not give him the needle. Is there not something set in stone for the age a pup should be for him to get his vaccinations?

Thanks ever so much for any info!

Michael.

No there is nothing set in stone, for example I do not have my dogs vaccinated until two weeks after I get them, ergo at 9 weeks.

It depends on the vet and the particular regime and protocol they use as advised by teh appropriate manufacturer.

My vet likes a pup to have become reasonably accustomed to its new home (at least a week) and then allows 2 weeks between first and second vaccination. In practice for me this meant 1st vacc at 9 weeks and second at 11. But as tohme says I think the regime is set by the product used and the vet's preference.

I always advise people to get their pups vaccinated as soon as possible, because delaying vaccination in most cases also delays socialisation, and it's really important to get out there and get your dog socialised.

Most vets these days will give 1st vaccination at 7 wks and 2nd vaccination at 9/10 wks, and if people have a vet who vaccinates later than this, I advise them to find an alternative vet, at least for the puppy vaccinations.

Some people don't wait for vaccinations before socialising puppies, other people keep them indoors until at least 2 weeks after the last vaccine, whilst others take a middle route and wait till after the 1st vaccination and then take the puppy out in a shoulder bag and to meet other vaccinated dogs and puppies in private houses and gardens.

both mine were done at 8 weeks and then 4 weeks later at 12 weeks. however when i had benji done when i got him at 13 weeks he was done at 14 weeks and then 2 weeks later at 16 weeks.

im not sure why there was a diffrence. i always thought it was just becasue of gidelines for certain products.

8 and 10 week i done mine,it the manfactor datials that states what to do and both injection must be bye the  same manfactor two,for legal reason to for the vets,

had the talk last night with a friend who is a vet, that why pup should not be inject bye the breeders at 7 to 8 week before it gos to it new home beacuse their vet may have a different product and you shoudnt mix two different manfactor produects,

Pups nowadays can have their first injection from 6 weeks.  I have always had a first injection at 8 weeks and then the second two weeks later. Then leave the pup for another week before taking him into the outside world.  Your vet is leaving a 4 week gap between first and second injection. That does not sound right to me at all.  I would take your pup back to your breeders vet for the second injection.

My pup had his 1st at 8wks then his second at 12wks. It depends on which vaccine is used. It is the 1st time that I have had one done like that, usually 8wks then 10wks with all my other vets.

I got my GSD pup on the day she turned 7 weeks. We had her vaccinated on the day she turned 8 weeks, and she had her second vaccination at 10 weeks. That way we could start classes with her sooner (rather than waiting until 12 weeks when many people have the second vaccination), and also, she was getting too big for me to carry everywhere for her socialisation, so it was nice to be able to start very gentle lead training early etc. The vet did say though when she decides when it is best to vaccinate, she takes into account the pups personality (a shy pup she will wait a bit longer for them to settle in with their owners), their size etc.
She was the youngest pup in puppy class because of having earlier vaccinations than the rest, but had no problems with keeping up (she was a lot brighter than the labs...)
She had no sickness at all. If anything, when the vet warned us she may be subdued on coming home (and we took a sigh of relief and thought we could catch up on sleep) she was actually hyperactive for about two days!

The only comparison I can make is she behaved like a child who had had too many blue Smarties...!

Nobivac do there's at 8 and 10 weeks, it does depend upon the vaccination.  I wouldn't use any other as it would be way toooooo late for my breed to be going and meeting people and dogs ar 14 weeks. using Nobivac |I'm out with them at 11.

I've actually just asked my vets this question earlier today and they give the first one at 8 wks and second at 10 wks.  Can then take the pup out a week later.   This is earlier than my last dog 3 year ago (when it was 10 then 12wks)

i would be presuming in the uk the vac are the same as in aus but here the first vac is done at 6 weeks then the 2nd at 8 and then the third at 12 weeks i wonder why it is different

Might it be because you have to vaccinate against rabies as well, slee? Only our pups have two vaccinations with the second usually a fortnight after the first.
- By slee [au] Date 17.12.05 05:22 UTC
no there is no rabbies vac here just first one parvo second distemper and third canine hepatitis
and if the dog is going into a kennel they give a kennal cough vac but if the pup is going to a home then the breeder doesnt do that vac the owner will do it if they put there dog in a kennel
