i am putting this post here because last night my dog had to go to the vets and be treated for eclampsia she didnt show any normal signs of eclampsia she was a little edgy and panting a little but it was a hot day
so i have now decided to post this here to let eveyone know of the possible signs of eclampsia after being told by my vet that most dogs dont show the usual signs and there are alot of signs
i am going to post my dogs signs and the usual signs and if anyone else has gone through eclampsia with their bitch please post what your bitches behavour and signs where i think it needs to be told because if i hadnt gotten my bitch to the vets she would have been dead by now and it is really a wake up call i have gone through many whelps and puppy rearing and never had a bitch with eclampsia before this and i only knew of the usual signs
USUAL SIGNS
Panting
Stiffness, difficulty walking
Muscle tremors or rigidity
Convulsions
High body temperature
Rapid respiratory rate
Possibly coma and death
MY DOGS SYMPTOMS
irratability (growling, biting)
lost interest in feeding pups but still want to be near them and clean them
trying to run away and hide
weepy eyes
runny nose
blank expression on her face
her stools had a distinct smell (kinda like vomit) very runny
vomiting stomach acid
lost interest in food and water
a week prior her coat had begun to fall out badly she had never left so much hair over my house
now half of that stuff i just listed as her symptoms could be put down to dehydration at this time of the year in australia and with a lactacting dog its very common and the other half could be put down to the pups starting feed at 16 days and she no longer needed to feed them so much it wasnt until her back legs went stiff that i knew she was in big trouble and all of this had been gradually happening over a couple of days wih the least obvious symptoms starting first
thankfully after contactin the vet this morning i have learnt my girl will be ok but will not be able to feed her pups again which isnt all that big of a problem seens they are already on solids and drinking water but its still a problem when the only usual sign she was showing was the stiffness the panting is everyday in this heat here so that wasnt a usual sign
if i had gone out like was planned my dog would have either died or to a point of coma
i have numerous dog books and breeding books and not in one does it list the symptoms she had as my vet said every dog is different and every dogs body reacts to things differently making eclampsia sign different in every dog

A week before my girl went down with Eclampsia, her back legs gave way.........my then vet told me it was a popped out disc in her back from the weight of carrying the litter!!!! Obviously now we realise it was early signs of Eclampsia!

WOW Isn't this a warning to us to act upon any unusual syptoms what ever the heck we think is wrong?? If I was worried at all I would ring the Vet, or take her, I always think instinct is a fantastic thing, works with your kids and doggies!! Glad she's ok now, love Dawn X

I read you post regarding the biting incident and it certainly explains why she did it, poor little love. Hope she's better soon.

yep she is doing good she came home lastnight she isnt allowed to feed her pups though which is ok because they are already on solids and know how to drink water but the problem i have is im not allowed to let them get back to her until her milk is dried up they have given me tablets to help it but the pups are screaming because they know mums back now so they want a drink ive had to pen my pups which i dont usual do of a day time and ofcourse mum is getting upset by the screaming has anybody else had to wean pups early what did you do to stop the pups crying i tried to give them a little formula but the turned it down should i just try the cartons of puppy milk not the formula but the actual older pup milk you can buy in the supermarket
All the best with your girl Slee.
Warm regards Susan

Hi, I have just read your post having logged on to write my own post on this condition. I have just been through this myself. My bitch is back home with me now but not out of the woods yet and I must admit it has been a really frightening experience with many tears being shed! My bitch did show the classic signs and luckily I had the "Book of the Bitch" to hand which helped me to identify what was going on and to rush her to hospital quickly. The day before she had just seemed more tired but I had just put this down to her being a toy breed and having four healthy, lively pups sucking her dry! It was the next morning that she showed the following signs:-
1/ Panting
2/ Tremors
3/ Lack of coordination while walking
4/ Increase in body temperature.
There doesn't seem to be much you can do to prevent this condition as it is just as dangerous if calcium levels are too high............. I guess unfortunately all we can do is to warn others to watch out for the signs and add to the plethora of worries!:-(
Anyway wishing you all the best ;-) Happy whelping!

The staring, hiding, and with young pups trying to bury them or carrying them around, and agression and possibly killing of pups where the symptoms I was aware of having read the book of the bitch. It really is a great book.

yeah i have a couple of books but just had the symptoms that i listed as usual im thinking i will update my book collection she probably wouldnt have gotten it if it wasnt her first litter and she didnt have so many
i have bred different bitches before and usually only managed 4-5 pups after 3 to 4 matings with this girl she mated once and produced 9 i only mated her once because with any of my girls first litters i dont want them having to many for her health reasons and i know with a healthy female and a healthy male in my breed if caught at the right time you are going to have a couple of pups and i have my females tested to see when they will be ready i was very suprised when nine where sitting there suckling of her being her first litter and only 1 mating but the male i used this time has been said to be very fertile and has only had a couple of misses and that was only because they tried to mate them at the wrong time
im just keeping a sharp eye on her now even though the pups arnt suckling of her anymore
i doubt she would have killed her pups she is very gentle with them and a very attentive protective mother but i guess you can never say never
hi slee sorry to her abot your dog , my mums dog came down with eclampsia and had to hand rear the pups herself although i dont remember that much as it was about 26 years ago but i think it is very thoughtfull of you to let others know of all the possible signs to look for especally for people like me who dont know all of the signs. it saves alot of time for people who dont have the time if their dog is not well and are panicking. iknow now where to look straight away thankyou again and i do hope you dont have to go through it again with anymore of your dogs
